Review duplicate videos before merging them in Apple Photos
Apple Photos can propose duplicate videos for library cleanup, but review the intended set before confirming a merge. Check that the items serve the same retention purpose and preserve any separately required source or edit. Library cleanup does not join recordings into a longer movie or establish an independently tested backup.

Review the proposed set instead of relying on matching thumbnails
Open the recordings represented in a duplicate group and compare meaningful content. Inspect duration, the beginning and ending, and the soundtrack you need. Two thumbnails from the same scene can conceal a shortened delivery or a different spoken-language version.
Decide whether both items have a reason to remain. A retained source and its deliberately edited derivative can be valuable even when their pictures are similar. Record that relationship before cleaning up a collection used by another editor or collaborator.
A Photos duplicate suggestion is a library feature, not your own cryptographic comparison. Do not describe the grouping as proof that every original file byte matches. For an exact-file claim, compare identified exported files through the separate checksum workflow.
Use the documented Duplicates collection for the intended library
Apple’s iOS 26 guide uses Photos → Collections → Utilities → Duplicates. Choose Merge for the desired set and confirm Merge [number] Items. It also says the collection does not appear when the library has no duplicates.
On Mac, Apple places Duplicates below Utilities in the Photos sidebar; expand Utilities if necessary. For an iCloud Shared Photo Library, its instructions use the toolbar’s Library menu and Both Libraries. Select the intended items or rows, then confirm the Merge action.
Start with a reviewed set rather than selecting the entire collection merely because a bulk action exists. Keep track of which library and recording you examined. An available cleanup control does not establish that every suggested group is expendable for your particular archive.
Check the remaining item and distinguish cleanup from editing
The Mac guide states that one original photo or video remains in the library and that removed duplicates go to Recently Deleted. Follow the current recovery controls if you need to reverse an unintended selection while those items remain recoverable.
Inspect the remaining recording directly. Check its recognizable content and required sound, rather than treating a reduced item count as evidence that all your delivery requirements were met. Note any uncertainty about the relationship between the surviving library item and a separately retained source file.
This Merge action concerns duplicate library inventory. If you want two consecutive recordings played as one movie, that is a different editing operation. Library cleanup neither supplies missing footage nor creates a longer timeline assembled from the selected videos.
Troubleshoot an absent collection without making a false completeness claim
Apple notes that duplicate analysis on Mac can take time depending on library size. Check the actual library view and the documented Utilities location before assuming the feature is unavailable. Do not promise a universal completion time or treat an empty collection as a comprehensive audit of every similar movie.
If your real concern is a missing recording, use the location and recovery guides instead. Deleting an item merely to provoke duplicate detection would introduce a new problem without answering whether the correct recording already exists.
Keep independent retention outside the cleanup decision. Review any separately required export and its recoverability before abandoning other copies. SocialVidDownloader does not scan Photos libraries or perform their Merge operation; this guide explains a native library workflow for your authorized media.
Worked example
Illustrative cleanup: a library shows two copies of a family interview. Before merging, the owner notices that a separately named delivery has a shorter ending and retains that version as an intentional edit. They merge only the reviewed duplicate set, check the remaining interview and keep their independently verified archive separate.
