Loudness range versus integrated loudness: separate the delivery checks

Integrated loudness and loudness range describe different aspects of a defined program. A program's overall loudness result does not determine how its level varies, and loudness range is not simply the highest sample peak minus the lowest sample. Identify the method, interval and receiving specification before comparing their numbers.

Choose the measurement for the actual question

Use integrated loudness when the question concerns the assessed program's overall loudness under the selected method. Use an appropriate loudness-range measurement when the delivery needs a description of variation in program loudness. Peak and true-peak checks answer another question about signal extremes and must not be substituted for either.

Record whether the assessment covers a full intended program or only a short excerpt. A quiet introduction can have a different distribution from the complete interview. Do not merge unlabeled results from another edit or a meter that accumulated earlier playback into a supposedly reproducible handoff report.

Use the specified method and review local passages

EBU Tech 3342 describes loudness range as a defined statistical measure based on loudness observations, with gating and distribution treatment. That is different from subtracting two arbitrary momentary readings. Use a meter implementing the actual required method rather than inventing a numerical proxy because it is easy to calculate.

Listen to quiet words, strong passages and transitions alongside the measurements. Two programs with similar integrated results can distribute their levels differently. If a particular answer is hard to hear, investigate that local mix and content before applying one global correction based on a range number alone.

Verify any processing and report the tested scope

Compression, gain changes and editing can alter measurements and listening behavior in different ways. Preserve the source and inspect an accepted derivative's actual integrated loudness, relevant range result and required peaks after final encoding. A meter displaying a target number does not establish complete intelligibility or an unchanged recording.

Use the recipient's documented criteria when they exist and record the file, method and assessed interval. There is no one invented loudness-range target that fits every recording and purpose. SocialVidDownloader does not certify mastering or expose a universal loudness-range correction. The useful outcome is a checked deliverable with precise measurement scope and unresolved local issues kept explicit.

Worked example

Example: two interview edits have similar integrated loudness, but one alternates between very quiet responses and emphatic narration. Review the actual passages and appropriate range evidence separately. A successful global loudness reading cannot prove that every quiet response became understandable or that dynamics remained appropriate.
