Mid-side recordings: decode the microphone pair before judging stereo

A mid-side microphone pair represents center information and a directional difference signal rather than ordinary left and right playback channels. It needs the intended decoding relationship before you judge its stereo image. Playing the raw pair as left/right or treating the side channel as an independent speaker can misrepresent the recording.

Confirm the source roles before decoding

Obtain the recording notes or recorder configuration that identifies the mid and side signals. Listen cautiously to each channel and check whether the file is a raw microphone pair or has already been decoded. A filename containing MS is useful context but not sufficient evidence. Decoding an already decoded stereo file again can change its balance in unintended ways.

Retain the untouched recording and document channel assignment and polarity. A two-channel source could instead contain dual mono microphones or conventional stereo. Those cases call for different editorial choices. If the recording's role is unknown, compare it with a known reference or ask the producer instead of declaring that a strange sounding channel is damaged.

Use the intended sum and difference relationship

The usual relationship forms left from mid plus side and right from mid minus side, with suitable gain scaling to avoid overload. Use an audio editor's documented mid-side decoder or a carefully verified channel matrix. The sign and assignment matter: an inverted or swapped side signal can reverse the image, while an unscaled sum can increase peaks beyond available headroom.

Side gain changes the contribution of stereo difference information. Do not maximize it automatically because a wider presentation seems impressive in headphones. Compare with the intended scene and check center speech, room ambience and transient peaks. Keep monitoring level stable while comparing settings so loudness does not masquerade as a better stereo image.

Verify stereo direction and a mono fold-down

Audition a known directional event to check left and right orientation after decoding. Then listen to a mono sum: correctly paired side contributions should cancel in the ideal decoding relationship, leaving the mid contribution. Real routing, scaling or polarity errors can change that outcome. Verify the signal path rather than treating the mono button as proof of correct source identification.

Inspect the saved channel arrangement and test the actual receiver, not just the editor's live output. Preserve the raw pair as well as the approved decoded derivative when later width adjustments are expected. SocialVidDownloader does not provide a mid-side microphone decoder or arbitrary channel matrix interface. Use an appropriate local audio editor for this operation and distinguish microphone decoding from alternate-language track selection or a routine stereo-to-mono downmix.

Worked example

Example: a raw mid-side field recording sounds lopsided when the mid microphone plays only through the left earbud. Identify the channels from production notes, decode with a documented matrix, and check a known passing sound for direction. Retain the original pair; the decoded review copy is an editorial derivative with a chosen side gain.
