Selected-file access is not unrestricted filesystem permission

Choosing a file through a supported picker provides access appropriate to that operation; it does not authorize every application or extension to read your entire storage. Diagnose whether the failure concerns selection, upload, receiver access or the media itself before granting broader permissions.

Identify the application and boundary involved

Check whether you are selecting an input for the website, opening a completed movie in another application, or allowing an extension to inspect a local address. Those actions can use different permission models. A movie present in your file manager is not automatically available to every sandboxed receiver.

Keep the exact intended file and its source intact. An application library entry can be a reference rather than the movie’s accessible local bytes. If the picker cannot show a file, confirm its location and availability using supported system controls instead of diagnosing codec corruption from an absent listing.

Use the narrow supported file-selection workflow

For the upload tools, select the authorized input through the visible file control and check the displayed name and byte size. Upload completion and media validation are later steps; a chosen filename alone does not establish either. Use the available ordering controls for operations that require a movie and a companion resource.

For an external player or approved extension, consult its supported local-file selection and permission controls. Grant only the scope needed for the chosen task. Do not install an unrelated extension or enable access to all local resources merely because one file-picker action failed.

Check a provider-backed or cloud-selected item

On Android and other supported systems, the actual system picker or document provider can expose an item through a limited selected-file workflow rather than granting an app every storage path. Use the intended supported selection and identify what the receiving app actually obtains. An app's own gallery, a system document picker and a photo picker can have different scopes; do not infer broad access from one selected filename.

If the chosen item is provider-backed or shown from cloud storage, a thumbnail and selection authorization do not independently prove that its complete bytes reached the app. Allow the supported retrieval or import to finish, inspect the actual failure stage if it does not, and verify the intended picture and sound in the receiving operation. A partial retrieval remains incomplete. Keep permissions narrow instead of granting every photo or filesystem location solely to escape a cloud-availability problem.

Verify the selected content and recipient independently

After processing, save the real output and open it in the intended receiver. Confirm that you selected the right version and any required sidecar. If opening is refused, distinguish access to the file from the receiver’s ability to decode its container and codec. A newly converted file will not necessarily repair an unrelated storage permission boundary.

On a managed device, preserve policy restrictions and report the selection or access failure to the responsible administrator. Avoid copying private source folders into publicly accessible locations as a shortcut. The useful diagnostic records application, file location and failure stage without sharing account credentials or unrelated personal data.

Worked example

A browser accepts one selected movie for conversion, but another application cannot access the directory containing the output. The user selects the completed file through that application’s supported picker and reviews its permissions. They do not conclude that the upload granted every program access to the whole directory or disable system protection to test one movie.
