Caption cue endpoints: investigate a boundary before retiming

A caption cue’s end boundary is part of its timing model, not another spoken word. A receiver’s display at that instant depends on the resource format, its processing rules and the playback time actually sampled. Compare the retained cue records with the intended speech before changing accurate timestamps to compensate for one screenshot.

Inspect the source timing and format

Retain the original caption resource and corresponding movie. Identify whether it is WebVTT, SRT, TTML or another representation; do not apply one parser’s rules to every format. Record the cue’s start and end and those of its neighbors. Confirm the time units and delimiter syntax before interpreting a numeric boundary as an overlap.

In WebVTT processing, an active cue uses the media playback position and its specified interval: the end boundary is not an extra interval of display. A screenshot or a frame-stepped preview may reflect a sampled position on one side of that boundary. Display rounding and the caption’s actual precision are separate from the number printed in a player’s coarse time counter.

Compare adjacent cues against the intended recording

Choose a known transition between phrases and inspect both cue records. A deliberate overlap, a continuous phrase split into adjacent cues and an accidental duplicate are different cases. Listen to the matching recording and confirm that you have the correct source version. An editor export from an older cut can have perfectly formed intervals but still be wrong for the current movie.

Play through the boundary normally, then use the receiver’s available inspection controls to compare a short interval before and after it. Repeat with another suitable renderer using the same resource if presentation seems inconsistent. Do not introduce a blanket one-frame gap simply because one paused frame shows both lines; that adjustment can make accurate text vanish early elsewhere.

Verify any actual correction and retain its scope

If the cue data genuinely overlaps unintentionally, edit a copy and review the complete affected phrase and its neighbors. Keep the intended end of speech and required reading opportunity in view. Check that the export did not round multiple boundaries into equal or reversed intervals, and reopen the exported resource in the target receiver rather than relying only on the editor timeline.

Record whether you corrected timing, fixed syntax or identified a receiver-specific display difference. Preserve the accepted parent and the changed resource under separate identities. Do not describe a boundary adjustment as a transcription correction when its words never changed. SocialVidDownloader’s local subtitle extraction requires an existing supported text track; it does not certify every renderer’s cue activation. The supplied SRT burn-in workflow produces visible text in a derivative, whose actual frame presentation needs its own check rather than a universal endpoint guarantee.

Worked example

Example: one WebVTT cue ends exactly when the next starts. A paused player image appears to hold the old line, but normal playback and the actual cue records show the intended transition. The reviewer tests the same file in a second receiver before adding a gap that would unnecessarily shorten the first cue.
