Caption time is media time, not automatically a calendar timestamp

A cue at two minutes identifies a position on its media timeline, not a date and time of day by itself. Establish the recording’s origin and version before relating caption text to an external event clock. A trimmed or retimed derivative can keep the same words while changing their relative offsets.

Record the media identity and available clock evidence

Retain the authorized movie and caption resource together. Record which movie version the captions accompany, the selected soundtrack and any documented timing offset. Treat a filename date, upload date and recording date as different evidence. None automatically supplies a trustworthy wall-clock origin for the first displayed frame.

If a producer supplies a recording start time, preserve its date, time zone, precision and stated relationship to the actual media origin. A camera clock can be wrong, and a live event can begin before recording starts. Do not fill missing values from your computer’s current time or infer an exact event date from a cue offset alone.

Map only a documented continuous interval

For a simple continuous recording with a known origin and unchanged playback rate, a media offset can be associated with that origin under the documented assumptions. Write those assumptions beside the derived time. If the recording was paused, cut, sped up or assembled from several sessions, one arithmetic addition may no longer describe later events.

Use the edit history or an explicit mapping for the relevant interval instead of stretching one start-time assumption across every cue. Caption timing can also differ from the exact moment an event occurred: words may be presented for reading, corrected later or delayed in a live workflow. A timestamped transcript is not automatically an independent measurement of the external event clock.

Verify boundaries and report uncertainty

Compare several identifiable events against the source and any independent authorized timing references. Check near the beginning and later in the interval for drift, cuts or changed origin. Confirm that you selected the resource for the accepted movie version. If an anchor is uncertain, preserve that uncertainty rather than reporting a second-level wall-clock result with unjustified precision.

Keep the original resource and any annotated derivative separate. Record the mapping, its source and its limits so another reviewer can reproduce the association. Where event timing matters legally or operationally, obtain suitable specialist review rather than treating a subtitle file as certified evidence. SocialVidDownloader does not certify recording clocks or create an event-time provenance record from a public URL. Its actual files and metadata may support a scoped media review, but a cue’s relative position alone cannot establish a historical date, time zone or uninterrupted chain of events.

Worked example

Example: a caption begins at 00:02:00 in a movie trimmed from a longer recording. Adding two minutes to the longer recording’s reported start ignores the removed introduction. The reviewer retains the edit mapping and states the supported time range instead of labeling the cue as an exact calendar event.
