Chapters and captions are different navigation resources

Chapters divide a recording into named regions; captions provide timed text associated with its content. A player may use either to help navigation, but an SRT is not automatically a chapter map. Inspect the actual resource inventory and preserve the intended recording version when copying or rebuilding navigation.

Video Information

Check which resource the receiving task requires

Ask whether the recipient needs a chapter menu, searchable spoken text or visible captions. Those are different requests. A chapter title may summarize a long interval without reproducing its speech, while caption cues can contain many short text events that were never intended as menu entries.

Inspect the movie’s actual chapter inventory with an appropriate local tool. In FFprobe, its chapter report can identify stored chapter boundaries and available tags. Keep their time scale and the movie’s version attached to the report so a later trim does not silently move the intended navigation points.

Preserve chapters deliberately in a local handoff

When making a local FFmpeg derivative, inspect the documented chapter-mapping options instead of assuming an audio/video stream selection preserves every navigation resource. Identify which input should supply chapters and whether its boundaries still match the new output’s duration. Verify the completed output’s chapter inventory after processing.

The current website utilities do not advertise an editable chapter-menu authoring interface or guaranteed preservation of every chapter during transformation. If a chapter structure is essential, use the appropriate local workflow and preserve the original. Subtitle extraction and SRT burn-in are not replacements for that operation.

Verify boundaries, labels and receiver behavior

Open the completed movie in the intended player and jump through representative chapter entries. Confirm that labels refer to the right material and that the last region does not point beyond the actual file. Also inspect captions independently if text access is part of the requirement.

If the player does not expose chapters, distinguish that receiver limitation from a missing stored resource by inspecting the output. If a shortened movie has old chapter times, rebuild the map against the intended edit rather than just importing its earlier tags. Keep navigation metadata and caption resources clearly labeled to prevent a misleading delivery.

Worked example

A tutorial is trimmed to remove its introduction, but its earlier chapter map is copied unchanged. The chapter named Setup now opens in the middle of the demonstration. The editor verifies the new timeline, adjusts the chapter boundaries in a suitable local workflow and checks caption cues separately; renaming the SRT would not repair the chapter menu.
