Audio description versus alternate-language audio

Audio description adds spoken information about visual action or other important visual details. It is not simply another language or a stereo channel. If a source exposes a descriptive track, check its label and listen before selecting it; a language code alone may not identify its accessibility purpose.

Recognize what the track is intended to do

A descriptive soundtrack can include narration during spaces in dialogue to help explain what is happening visually. Its purpose differs from translating dialogue into another language. A source can potentially have descriptive and non-descriptive recordings in the same language.

Listen to a representative scene and inspect the track label or source information. Do not infer description solely from a familiar language tag. Metadata may be incomplete, and commentary or a dubbed soundtrack can have different purposes. When the purpose is uncertain, describe the evidence instead of assigning an accessibility label that has not been verified.

Select only a genuinely exposed source stream

The downloader's returned inventory determines what is available for processing. A source platform may offer accessibility features that public extraction does not expose for a particular item. The existence of an audio-description feature on the platform is not a guarantee for every video.

If a descriptive stream is available, select it explicitly where the interface supports that choice. If retaining multiple streams is offered, check whether the intended descriptive recording is included. Default playback can choose another stream, so keep track selection separate from the question of whether the file contains that recording at all.

Verify accessibility information after saving

Open the complete local file in a player that supports its container, codecs, and alternate-track controls. Select the intended stream and listen through a scene that includes visual action. Confirm that the description remains present rather than relying on a filename.

Do not label an ordinary dubbed track as descriptive audio or promise automatic accessibility narration. Source retrieval preserves an existing recording; generating description is a separate production task requiring accurate visual understanding and review. If the source track is missing or not retrievable, state that limitation. Keep the selected label, local track list, and listening result in any report so that a missing stream can be distinguished from a player that simply started on the wrong default.

Worked example

Illustrative case: two English audio streams are exposed, one marked as descriptive. Listening confirms that it narrates visual action between dialogue. A local player initially chooses ordinary English; selecting the second stream reveals that the descriptive recording was retained rather than lost.
