FFmpeg audio measurements: select the stream and interval
An audio statistic describes the selected decoded signal and measurement interval. Select the intended stream before comparing channels or peaks, and record whether statistics were cumulative or reset. A read-only analysis does not normalize the recording, certify linguistic accuracy or prove that a quiet channel contains no meaningful content.

Select actual audio and a bounded interval
Inspect the local file's stream list and identify the soundtrack you intend to measure. Default selection can choose a different language or role. A useful local example is ffmpeg -hide_banner -i source.mkv -map 0:a:0 -t 10 -af astats=metadata=0:reset=0 -f null -. This examines the first selected audio stream over a bounded output interval without writing a new movie.
Keep the path and interval in private review notes and read the command's actual selected-stream and error output. A ten-second sample cannot be reported as a whole-program analysis. For a later interval, use the documented seek and duration controls and verify which content was decoded rather than assuming a timestamp alone guarantees your intended passage.
Interpret channel, level and spectral evidence separately
FFmpeg astats provides time-domain per-channel and overall information according to its measurement configuration. Reset behavior changes the accumulation scope. A per-channel peak, DC offset or sample count is not the same as integrated program loudness, and a zero-like result can reflect the wrong interval or selected component rather than missing source speech.
The volumedetect and aspectralstats filters answer different measurement questions. Frequency-domain descriptors do not identify a speaker, certify intelligibility or reconstruct a lost sound. Likewise, a volume reading cannot substitute for a specified true-peak or loudness method. State the actual filter and scope alongside the number instead of comparing unlabeled results from unrelated paths.
Verify measurement separately from an applied processing pass
If a delivery needs normalization, use the appropriate documented processor and verify its actual saved output as a separate task. Running an analysis filter to a null sink is not a normalized downloadable artifact. Loudnorm reporting and a properly configured application pass also have distinct roles; reused measurements must correspond to the same intended input and processing path.
Listen to relevant quiet speech, peaks and transitions before deciding what a measurement implies. Retain the unchanged source and label any later derivative. SocialVidDownloader's media-information utility and source inventory do not provide mastering certification or every FFmpeg analysis control. A useful report connects selected stream, interval, method and listening evidence without inventing a corrected file from a printed statistic.
Worked example
Example: a ten-second astats run covers an unspoken introduction while dialogue starts later. Its low level does not prove the full interview lacks speech. Measure the relevant selected soundtrack interval and report that scope; an analysis log is not an audio export or a complete loudness-compliance result.
