Audio de-emphasis: require the actual source convention
De-emphasis is appropriate when a known recording or delivery convention requires a corresponding playback correction. It is not a universal way to make ordinary speech warmer or repair compression. Establish the actual source convention and whether correction already occurred before applying another curve.

Retain the source and identify the processing history
Keep the authorized original and any production notes describing its capture or delivery. A file extension, an old recording date or a bright-sounding voice does not by itself identify an emphasis convention. The source may already be a corrected transfer rather than the unprocessed representation that requires playback compensation.
Ask the supplier which correction, if any, was used and preserve uncertainty when the history is unknown. Distinguish a technical reproduction requirement from a creative tonal preference. If the task is merely equalization, label it that way; calling a subjective adjustment de-emphasis can imply source evidence that the operator does not have.
Select the matching curve and direction
Check ffmpeg -h filter=aemphasis for the installed options. The filter distinguishes production from reproduction and supports named conventions. A CD reproduction curve and an FM time-constant choice are not interchangeable simply because each changes tonal balance. Choose only the actual documented source context and verify the direction before processing.
For a source genuinely requiring the corresponding CD reproduction correction, an illustrative bounded test is ffmpeg -n -i source.wav -t 10 -map 0:a:0 -af "aemphasis=mode=reproduction: type=cd" -c:a pcm_s16le review-emphasis.wav. This is not a default command for every CD-derived file or online soundtrack. Retain the input and choose an output representation suitable for the real delivery.
Verify the saved sound and record what remains uncertain
Compare the same representative phrases in the original and derivative at similar levels. Listen for unwanted dullness, exaggerated noise and lost intelligibility. Inspect peaks and the actual output duration. A successful filter run establishes that a transformation executed, not that the selected curve was historically correct for an unknown recording.
Keep the source evidence, chosen curve, mode and accepted output identity together. If the recording was already corrected, applying reproduction again can distort the intended balance. When provenance remains unresolved, retain that limitation and obtain an appropriate source or specialist assessment instead of cycling through curves until one sounds pleasant. SocialVidDownloader does not identify historical emphasis automatically or expose these reproduction controls. An external tonal adjustment must remain distinct from claims of restored original quality or verified preservation of the capture’s intended response.
Worked example
Example: an archive receives a WAV labeled as an old CD transfer but without a processing record. The operator asks whether de-emphasis already occurred before choosing a curve. A pleasing preview alone is not treated as proof of the correct reproduction convention.
