Concat demuxer versus decoded concatenation

Packet concatenation and decoded timeline assembly have different compatibility requirements. Do not choose a stream-copy join simply because two filenames share an extension. Inspect the streams and the intended handoff; when normalization is required, a decoded, re-encoded assembly is a different derivative and should be described that way.

Compare compatibility at the stream level

Two MP4 files may differ in image dimensions, video encoding, frame timing or audio configuration. The extension identifies a container rather than a promise that packets can be joined safely. Inspect representative inputs and retain their order before deciding how the sequence should be delivered.

A packet-oriented concatenation aims to retain encoded content without the same processing as a decoded filter graph. A decoded assembly can normalize pictures and sound, but it creates newly encoded output. These are separate choices about the representation, and neither establishes that edits, captions or project dependencies were preserved.

Inspect the normalization used by this merger

The site’s merger uses a decoded concatenation filter. It fits clips to the first video’s bounded picture dimensions, adds padding where needed, establishes square pixels and uses a common frame cadence. Those choices make a combined viewing copy; they do not claim packet identity with every original input.

Audio is handled as a common stream when all selected clips contain sound. Inputs with mixed audio presence are rejected instead of silently discarding another clip’s soundtrack. Normalize the intended deliverables beforehand or choose a different authorized workflow when you need deliberate silence insertion. The current merger does not invent a track on your behalf.

Verify every join in the saved result

Review the last moments of each clip and the opening of the next one. Confirm order, picture shape and sound continuity, then inspect total duration and the exported stream inventory. A playable first frame does not prove that later joins contain the intended material or that a portrait shot was framed appropriately.

Keep the source clips and identify the result as a merged derivative. If a receiving editor needs editable clips or an exact encoded archive, deliver those originals separately rather than presenting a normalized movie as the same resource. No joining operation repairs missing frames or confers permission to reuse material you are not authorized to edit.

Worked example

Two authorized clips have different picture dimensions. The merger creates one sequence by fitting both to the first clip’s output frame and encoding the result. The second shot can gain visible padding. That is an expected normalization choice to review, not evidence that its original file has acquired the first recording’s resolution.
