FFmpeg metadata copying: distinguish file, stream and chapter scope

FFmpeg metadata belongs to different scopes, including the file, individual streams and chapters. A command that disables global metadata copying is not automatically a command that removes every stream tag or external provenance record. Define the required retention or removal scope and inspect the actual saved artifact before calling a handoff complete.

Inventory tags separately from media content

Retain the permitted original and inspect its format and streams with FFprobe. Record the required video, audio, subtitle and chapter resources independently of descriptive tags. A language label describes a stream; it does not create a translated recording, while an encoder tag can describe processing without certifying what the original source contained.

Determine whether the task is to retain editorial identification, remove an unnecessary location value or transfer a specific caption language. List known external manifests and sidecars separately. Metadata inside one output container is not a complete inventory of personal information visible in pictures, spoken in sound or stored elsewhere in the package.

Check an embedded title separately from the filename

For a container title check, a read-only example is ffprobe -v error -show_entries format_tags=title -of json source.mkv. Inspect the reported global tag rather than assuming the filesystem name is the embedded title. A library can instead display a catalog label, so compare the actual receiver and stored report before changing the movie.

Renaming the file does not by itself rewrite its internal title. For a permitted change, choose the intended metadata scope through a supported editor or native metadata option and save a separately verified derivative. Preserve the original label in the manifest when needed. Check the receiving display and selected resources after the change; a title edit is not a new captured recording or an identical-byte copy.

Choose an explicit scope and a new output

An illustrative compatible remux is ffmpeg -n -i source.mkv -map 0 -c copy -map_metadata -1 review.mkv. The explicit stream mapping requests the input streams, while this unqualified metadata option disables the automatic global metadata mapping. It is not a universal scrub of every per-stream or chapter value. The output container must support the mapped resources, and the command can fail when it does not.

FFmpeg documents metadata specifiers for global, stream, chapter and program scopes. Select the intended scope according to the actual requirement rather than repeatedly adding flags until a familiar tag disappears. Chapter copying has its own map_chapters control. Setting an empty value for one named tag also does not prove that equivalent identifying information is absent under another name or in another resource.

Verify the saved tags and selected recording

Inspect the derivative with an appropriate container-aware tool and compare the actual required tag scopes. Some output information is generated by the encoder or muxer rather than copied from input. Do not interpret a newly generated format label as failure to disable every copy, or interpret the absence of one old label as proof that the whole file is anonymous.

Play the resulting movie and select the needed tracks. Check language identity by content when relevant, along with duration and synchronization. Stream-copy media and changed descriptive metadata are different claims from byte-identical archival copying. Keep the source and record the options and verified scope. SocialVidDownloader does not provide a universal metadata scrubber or a privacy certification. For sensitive handoffs, review visible and audible information and any retained companion resources as well as the exact container tags.

Worked example

Example: an editor suppresses global tags during a compatible MKV remux. The new file still contains a language tag on an audio stream and chapter titles. The operator checks those separate scopes against the delivery requirement instead of reporting that one global option removed all metadata.
