FFmpeg inverse telecine: verify the actual source cadence
Inverse telecine attempts to recover progressive pictures from a known film-to-video field arrangement. It is not a general instruction to delete similar frames or change every thirty-frame recording to twenty-four frames. Identify the source cadence, field order and cut position first; otherwise the conversion can damage motion and synchronization while still producing a playable movie.

Inspect motion and fields before choosing a method
Retain the original and choose a short moving passage plus a scene boundary. Inspect consecutive pictures or fields with a receiver appropriate to the source. A systematic repeated-field pattern is different from a genuinely interlaced camera capture, a frozen scene or irregular variable-frame-rate material. A frame-rate label alone cannot establish which case applies.
Record whether the source combines different production types. A regular pattern may hold for one scene and fail across inserted titles or another camera source. Do not judge the whole recording by a few nearly static pictures. Keep sound and meaningful action landmarks as independent timing references for the accepted derivative.
Test the native pattern interpretation on a bounded copy
Inspect ffmpeg -h filter=detelecine. The filter requires a predefined pattern corresponding to the telecine operation. It also exposes first_field and start_frame, which matter when a cut begins at a different position in that pattern. The default pattern is not evidence that an unknown source uses it.
For a source independently established as top-field-first with a 23 pattern beginning at its expected position, an illustrative command is ffmpeg -n -t 10 -i source.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -vf "detelecine=first_field=top: pattern=23: start_frame=0" -an -c:v libx264 review-cadence.mp4. Change assumptions only from source evidence, not until an export looks smoother by chance. This short video-only output is not a complete sound-and-caption delivery.
Distinguish field matching from indiscriminate frame removal
FFmpeg fieldmatch reconstructs progressive pictures through field matching but does not itself remove repeated reconstructed frames. A suitable decimation step can follow it for an identified telecined source. Inspect the installed help and source requirements before adopting that alternative; a fieldmatch name alone does not complete the cadence conversion.
The native decimate filter normally removes one frame per configured cycle and uses similarity metrics in that decision. Applying a cycle to an unrelated static scene can remove real intended duration or motion. A pause, slide or duplicate-looking camera frame is not automatically a production artifact. Preserve justified holds instead of treating a visually quiet interval as expendable.
Verify the saved result and full delivery timing
Compare source and saved output through movement, scene cuts and an interval outside the initial test. Check for residual combing, periodic stutter, missing action or duplicated motion. Inspect actual duration and timestamps; do not infer success from a changed nominal rate. For the complete delivery, retain and compare required sound and caption landmarks at the beginning, middle and end.
Keep the original and document the accepted pattern and scope. Mixed material may need a different supported workflow rather than one universal conversion across the entire recording. SocialVidDownloader does not expose arbitrary inverse-telecine pattern controls or certify restoration of film originals. Leave incorrect or uncertain results unapproved and describe the derivative’s real processing instead of claiming that every similar frame was safely redundant.
Worked example
Example: a repeated-field pattern is clear in a moving shot but an inserted title has a different cadence. A short test looks clean before the cut and loses the title’s intended timing afterward. The reviewer preserves the parent and revises the scope rather than approving a whole-file conversion from the first scene alone.
