FFmpeg drawtext timecode: identify the clock you actually label

A drawtext timecode overlay labels pictures according to the initial value and rate you configure. It does not automatically establish camera capture time or the source-to-sequence relationship. Define the reference before rendering, keep the clean parent, and verify the saved labels against recognizable frames before using them in an editing handoff.

Choose the reference and actual media version

Decide whether the reviewer needs source timecode, elapsed position in a retained movie or a particular edited sequence’s reference. Identify the exact media and edit version with that choice. A derivative can start at zero even when its parent’s source reference began elsewhere, and a nonzero label does not prove missing footage.

Inspect actual source timing and any independently supplied production timecode. Do not infer an original camera clock from download date, filesystem modification time or a translated title. If the reference is unknown, label the review by known local position and record the limitation rather than creating a plausible-looking production origin.

Inspect native drawtext options before configuring a label

Run ffmpeg -h filter=drawtext on the local installation to check availability, font access and timecode controls. The timecode option supplies an initial frame-based value and requires timecode_rate. The documented rate is rounded to an integer, and its drop-frame support has specific rate conditions; a decimal frame-rate label is not a universal interchangeable timecode convention.

Use a deliberate initial value, appropriate rate and documented escaping for that shell and filter configuration. Specify an available permitted font and readable placement. The tc24hmax option controls wrapping at twenty-four hours rather than the source’s date. These are generated label choices, not evidence that the tool discovered original capture metadata.

Make a bounded review and verify frame correspondence

Render a short representative source interval into a new output through the documented local drawtext workflow. Keep the input interval bounded and retain an unlabelled parent. Read actual filter errors instead of accepting a file produced by a fallback that omitted the requested reference.

Open the saved file and compare a known first picture, a later event and the ending with the chosen reference. Check readable digits and frame fields, not only that a clock appears. Retiming, duplicate or dropped pictures and a different local start can make a configured counter unsuitable for referring back to the intended source frames.

Deliver the overlay as a documented derivative

Provide the movie identity, reference type, rate convention and initial value with review notes. A bare displayed number can be ambiguous to an editor using another sequence or source version. Include a short visual or spoken landmark so the recipient can confirm the located event before making a change.

Keep required sound and captions explicitly retained and verified in the finished review. SocialVidDownloader’s text-watermark utility does not expose native timecode_rate or certify camera-clock overlays. A burned label changes the pictures and is not a recovery of absent timecode metadata. If the label’s relationship to the parent is uncertain, leave that handoff unapproved and use a clear known-position reference instead.

Worked example

Example: an excerpt is labelled from zero while the source clip has a nonzero production origin. The recipient initially locates the number in the wrong timeline. A note identifying the excerpt, its chosen origin and a recognizable action resolves the ambiguity without pretending that the generated counter preserved the camera reference.
