FFV1 archive derivatives versus convenient viewing copies
FFV1 is a lossless video coding format, but an FFV1 derivative is not automatically a byte-identical copy of the original container. Decide whether the archive needs original encoded media, a decoded preservation representation or both. A convenient smaller viewing copy serves another purpose and should be identified separately.

Define the representation being preserved
Record the source codec, pixel representation, timing and required sound or caption resources. Lossless video coding preserves the values supplied to its encoder under the supported representation; an earlier color conversion, resize or source decode limitation is a separate stage. Encoding those changed values losslessly does not reverse the transformation.
Keep the original encoded file when source-bitstream preservation matters. A new container can have different metadata, stream selection and byte layout even when decoded pictures correspond. Do not compare whole-file hashes of the original and FFV1 derivative and interpret the expected mismatch as proof that its decoded picture coding was lossy.
Prepare a compatible preservation workflow
Use a documented tool that supports the actual FFV1 version and intended container and receiver. Check accepted pixel formats before processing and avoid silent coercion when exact sample representation matters. The audio path also requires its own decision; selecting a lossless video codec does not make every accompanying audio conversion lossless or preserve every track.
Retain subtitles, chapters, attachments and source notes explicitly when the archive needs them. A video-only command is not a complete production archive. Plan actual processing and storage requirements instead of claiming one fixed size ratio between FFV1 and every compressed input. Content, representation and encoder settings affect the resulting artifact.
Verify preservation and viewing delivery independently
Inspect the saved streams and decode representative or required complete intervals through a compatible tool. For a sample-exact picture requirement, compare decoded values under a consistent interpretation rather than thumbnails alone. Record the verification method, scope and unresolved changes; a successful encoder exit is useful but narrower evidence.
Create a separate labelled viewing derivative only when authorized and useful for the recipient. Check its picture, sound and timing without presenting it as the retained preservation representation. SocialVidDownloader does not certify FFV1 archives or recover lost camera detail. Its local converter should not be assumed to expose professional archival codecs beyond its actual supported choices, and every retained artifact still needs independent storage and recovery planning.
Worked example
Example: an authorized source is resized before being encoded as FFV1. The output can preserve the resized samples losslessly while no longer preserving the original raster values. Keep the original and document the resize; a lossless codec label alone cannot certify the entire preceding pipeline as unchanged.
