Final Cut: expand audio, detach it or break apart clip items
Use Expand Audio when you need to see sound separately while keeping the clip together. Detach Audio creates an independently editable connected audio clip. Break Apart Clip Items replaces a supported container clip with its contents. Choose the operation by the editing relationship you need to change, rather than using all three as interchangeable ways to reveal a waveform.

Choose visibility before changing structure
Select the intended timeline clip. Clip > Expand Audio, or Control-S, displays its picture and sound separately while they remain attached. Clip > Expand Audio Components, or Control-Option-S, exposes individual components for channel-level work. Collapsing these views changes presentation, not which original recordings you possess.
For an overlapping dialogue edit, try the expanded view first. Identify the end of the spoken phrase and the intended picture cut independently. A separate visible audio area does not require detachment, and avoiding an unnecessary structural change makes later picture-and-sound revisions easier to understand.
Detach only when independent movement is required
Choose Clip > Detach Audio, or Control-Shift-S, for the selected clip. The audio becomes a connected clip below the video. Confirm its connection and current position before dragging it: independent editing makes an accidental timing change possible even if nothing appeared to move when the command ran.
Keep a project version from before the change. If the goal is to silence one microphone, component enablement may be the narrower adjustment. Detachment does not separate a mixed soundtrack into original voices or musical instruments, and it does not create another recorded language.
Break apart a container only for its actual contents
For a compound or standard clip in the timeline, Clip > Break Apart Clip Items, or Shift-Command-G, replaces the selected item with its individual contents. Apple documents that a compound clip’s parent remains in the browser. Opening a compound clip to edit inside it is a different operation from replacing its timeline instance with those items.
Before applying the command, identify whether you are looking at an ordinary clip, a compound arrangement or a synchronized recording. Do not infer identical behavior for every container from its visual outline. A synchronization adjustment should begin by examining the contained sources and their alignment, not by breaking structures merely to make waveforms visible.
Verify independent items against a retained reference
Play across the altered boundary and compare a shared sound-and-picture landmark. Check another event later in the scene, particularly after moving detached sound. Inspect the actual active audio contribution so that a camera microphone and the preferred recording have not both become an unintended doubled mix.
Share a short review interval and listen outside the editor. Preserve the editable project and original media if any offset or missing contribution remains. SocialVidDownloader cannot repair Final Cut clip relationships from an exported movie; resolving that relationship belongs in the native project before the final share.
Worked example
Example: an editor only needs dialogue to continue underneath the next shot. Expanded audio allows the boundary to be reviewed without first creating an independent soundtrack clip. Detachment is reserved for an intentional independent move, followed by a synchronization check.
