Final Cut freeze frames: verify placement, duration and sound
A Final Cut freeze-frame clip repeats one chosen picture for a duration. Its placement depends on whether you create it from the browser or timeline. Check that placement, the held frame and the surrounding sound before accepting the edit; a still picture does not supply new action or automatically extend the recorded soundtrack.

Choose the exact picture and its role
Park the skimmer or playhead on the intended frame and inspect it at a useful viewing size. Motion blur, half-closed eyes or an incomplete gesture can become much more noticeable when a frame remains visible. Choose a frame that communicates the intended event without implying that the original action stopped there.
Decide whether the task needs a separate freeze clip, a hold segment within a retimed clip or an exported still-image file. Those resources serve different purposes. Keep an editable project version before inserting time into a cut that already has synchronized narration or music cues.
Create the native freeze and inspect its placement
Choose Edit > Add Freeze Frame, or Option-F. Apple documents that a freeze created from a timeline clip is inserted at the current skimmer or playhead position. A freeze created from the browser is attached as a connected clip at the timeline playhead instead.
Check the resulting timeline, including what moved and which image covers the underlying story. Apple also notes that previously applied source attributes and effects are rendered into the freeze. Do not assume the new still retains all the original independently adjustable effect relationships.
Set duration deliberately and review audio continuity
Apple ties the default freeze duration to the Still Images setting in Final Cut’s Editing settings. Inspect the actual inserted duration and trim it to the editorial requirement rather than relying on that default. A changed default is not a substitute for reviewing the particular freeze already in the project.
Listen across the entry and exit. Decide whether narration continues, a room tone is needed or silence is intentional. Inspect later cues if the insertion lengthened the sequence. Holding picture while an unrelated sound continues can change the scene’s meaning even when the edit is technically smooth.
Verify the returned action and saved result
Play the whole passage at normal speed. Check the first moving frame after the hold for a jump or repeated action, and confirm that titles remain readable for the intended interval. Review the freeze on the actual output size, where sharpening or scaling artifacts may be easier to see.
Reopen the shared file and compare its duration and soundtrack with the accepted edit. Keep the original recording and label the hold as an editorial change when that context matters. This native workflow does not restore missing footage or certify that an event lasted as long as the freeze suggests.
Worked example
Example: a demonstration pauses on a useful hand position for explanation. The editor creates a timeline freeze, adjusts its duration and checks the resumed movement and narration. A browser-created connected freeze would require a different check of the picture underneath it.
