Final Cut HDR Tools: avoid applying the same conversion twice

Before adding HDR Tools in Final Cut, inspect the clip’s Color Conform setting. Automatic Color Conform may already convert that source into the project’s color space. Apple warns that Color Conform and HDR Tools are additive; using both for the same conversion can produce an unintended double transformation.

Identify the conversion already taking place

Record the source representation and the project’s color space, including whether the HDR material is identified as HLG or PQ. Use source documentation and the clip’s interpretation rather than guessing from brightness. A wrong input assumption can make a technically successful conversion visually wrong.

Select the clip and inspect Color Conform in the Video inspector. Automatic conversion follows the source-to-project context. Manual provides an explicit Conversion Type, while None disables that Color Conform conversion. Note the current choice before changing it so the previous accepted state can be restored.

Choose one justified conversion path

Use the built-in Color Conform when it meets the workflow. Apple retains HDR Tools for compatibility and for cases needing control over the conversion’s position among other effects. Do not add HDR Tools simply because a project contains HDR material.

When the workflow calls for HDR Tools, avoid leaving a duplicate Color Conform conversion active. Choose the effect’s appropriate conversion for the actual source and destination, then inspect its position relative to other processing. Moving a transform before or after a grade changes which representation that grade receives.

Check the effect chain with controlled comparisons

Compare a representative frame and a moving interval with a known baseline. Look for compressed highlight separation, changed midtones and unexpected color shifts. If disabling one conversion corrects the picture, record the duplicate-processing diagnosis instead of hiding it with a compensating grade.

The General setting for automatic Color Conform controls its application to newly added material; it should not be treated as proof that an existing timeline has been changed throughout. Inspect the actual clips involved. Mixed-source projects can contain different settings that need separate review.

Verify the receiver-specific derivative

Export a short interval containing highlights, skin and any overlays. Inspect the file in the intended SDR or HDR receiving context and compare it with the accepted project view. Do not judge an SDR conversion solely on a display configuration meant for a different signal.

Keep the original HDR source and the editable conversion decisions. Tone mapping creates a delivery interpretation; it does not preserve every possible presentation or restore detail missing from the source. Record which transform was used and why so a later output revision does not unknowingly add the conversion again.

Worked example

Example: an HDR clip already receives automatic conversion in an SDR project. Adding HDR Tools makes it look unexpectedly compressed. The editor checks both transformations, selects one deliberate conversion route, and verifies a new SDR export rather than pushing the grade to compensate for duplicate processing.
