Final Cut position keyframes: inspect curved and linear paths

In Final Cut, Smooth and Linear position-keyframe choices change the shape of a Transform motion path. They do not by themselves establish that an animation’s timing or framing is correct. Inspect the path between points, the duration between them and the moving picture before accepting a graphic that reaches the right endpoints.

Record the intended path and timing separately

Choose the starting position, destination and any necessary intermediate waypoint. Note when the object should arrive, pause or leave. An animation can follow the desired geometric route while reaching an important annotation too late, so do not use a curve’s appearance as a substitute for temporal review.

Keep the original project state and choose the actual clip to animate. Check whether the moving object is the complete video frame or a title inside another template. These instructions concern native Transform position controls; a Motion template can have different published parameters and internal animation.

Create and inspect native Transform keyframes

Select the timeline clip, open Transform from the viewer menu or Shift-T, and place the playhead at the intended start. Set the initial position and add a keyframe. Move to another time and adjust the position; Apple documents the resulting motion path and automatically added point after animation is established.

Control-click a position point in the viewer to choose Smooth or Linear. Smooth supplies Bezier handles for a curved path, while Linear produces direct segments. Drag handles deliberately and inspect intermediate positions rather than assuming the default curve remains inside the visible frame.

Check overshoot, direction and interval length

Scrub between each pair of points and then play at ordinary speed. A smooth curve can swing beyond the expected route, covering another label or leaving the composition. A sharp linear corner may be appropriate for a diagram but distracting for a floating picture. Choose by the communication task.

Review the time spacing as well as the route. Two points close together in time can create a fast move even on a gentle curve. If an edit changes the clip’s duration, recheck the animation at the new boundaries rather than assuming every keyframe automatically follows the revised editorial intention.

Verify visibility through the saved animation

Inspect readable text and important picture detail throughout the move, including any background exposed by a scaled or repositioned frame. Check the entrance and final hold. A correct ending screenshot cannot reveal a mid-path obstruction or a movement too fast for the viewer to follow.

Share a representative interval and reopen the resulting movie. Retain the editable keyframes and original clip for later adjustments. SocialVidDownloader does not reconstruct native position curves from a rendered file; the accepted derivative should be described by the motion actually reviewed, not by an untested claim that smoothing guarantees professional animation.

Worked example

Example: an inset moves around a diagram. Its endpoints are correct, but a Smooth path passes over an essential label halfway through. The editor adjusts the handles or chooses a linear segment, then checks both the route and arrival time in the exported passage.
