Check whether an iCloud video is available on the device
A video listed in iCloud Drive can be different from a file whose bytes are retained locally. Locate the completed download, identify whether its folder is local or cloud-backed, and verify offline access before relying on it. Sync visibility does not guarantee that a device can play the file without retrieval.

Identify the storage layer
Files on iPhone or iPad and Finder on Mac can show iCloud Drive content alongside other locations. The service’s save link transfers media to the destination chosen by the browser and device; it does not manage iCloud syncing or force an offline copy on every signed-in device.
First distinguish the original source URL, the temporary prepared link and the saved media object. Only the media object can become a retained copy. Apple documents making copies of information stored in iCloud; that is a separate storage workflow from the downloader’s preparation and temporary-file expiration.
Make a deliberate retained copy
Confirm the filename, size and full playback before relying on the item. If the location is cloud-backed, use its supported download or copying controls to obtain local availability. Menu names can vary with the device and software version; follow the location’s own storage status rather than assuming a visible thumbnail means all bytes are present.
When a separate archive is needed, copy a verified authorized file into a destination you control and check that copy independently. Syncing the same object across devices does not necessarily create an independent backup. A local copy and a synced object may have different update and deletion behavior.
Troubleshoot retrieval and format separately
A cloud retrieval failure is not the same as a video-codec failure. Check whether the file is available and readable first. If it then fails to play, inspect the actual container and audio/video combination, especially for WebM or multi-audio MKV output.
If no complete media was saved before the service token expired, analyze the original permitted source again. Changing a browser download folder cannot recover unavailable upstream content. Do not remove an older verified copy until the new destination is checked, and avoid posting private account information while diagnosing cloud access.
Worked example
A clip appears in iCloud Drive on a second device, but opening it without connectivity fails. Its synced listing was not proof of local availability. Obtain a local copy through the supported storage workflow, then verify duration and sound. The first device’s successful service download does not promise automatic offline playback on every other device.
