Why an available audio stream may have no language label

An audio stream can be real and playable without a reliable language tag. When the source does not identify its language, this downloader keeps that language unknown. A compact Original label for a sole track is a user-interface fallback; it is not evidence that the engine detected English or any other language.

Separate existence from identification

A codec and stream index can establish that audio exists. They do not identify the language spoken in it. Source language tags and extractor metadata supply a different kind of evidence, and they are sometimes absent even on ordinary videos with sound.

The normalization layer considers audio-bearing formats and measured embedded streams. It does not create extra tracks from a subtitles menu, from the browser interface language, or from a general description of the video. Several bitrate versions of the same track should not appear as several languages.

Read the available control honestly

With one unknown audio option, a small Audio: Original summary avoids presenting a made-up language picker. That is different from source-confirmed original/default flags. Where source metadata marks a known track as original or default, those roles can be shown explicitly alongside its language.

A larger language selector appears only when real compatible source options exist. Selecting a video quality can change which audio options can be packaged with it. Recheck the selection after changing quality rather than assuming a language remains available for every format.

Check a mismatch without guessing

An exported stream may use und, meaning undefined language, rather than an invented language code. That is not the same as silent audio. Play the file to establish whether sound is present, and inspect the stream list if a player hides its controls.

If a source explicitly identifies a selected language but the downloaded stream carries contradictory language metadata, the engine rejects that conflict before writing the desired label onto the output. This check prevents a wrong stream from appearing verified merely because it was renamed. Unknown metadata is preserved rather than filled with a guess.

Worked example

The live ordinary YouTube regression for Me at the zoo produced one real AAC stream whose language tag stayed und. Its source offered no reliable language label in that extraction. Calling the option English would have invented metadata; labeling the single choice Original kept the workflow usable while leaving its language unknown.
