OBS capture resolution: inspect the input before judging the recording

A large OBS output resolution does not prove the camera or capture device supplied that much original detail. Inspect the actual input device and supported native resolution/rate, then verify a saved sample. Output scaling, source transformation and input negotiation are different stages and can produce similar-looking labels while preserving different information.

Identify the authorized capture device and signal

Select the intended Video Capture source and inspect its Properties. Confirm the actual Device, not only the source’s editable display name. A webcam, capture card and another capture-source type can expose different native settings and operating-system support. Follow the installed interface and device guidance for the source in use.

Keep a known permitted test scene with readable detail and motion. Check what the connected device itself supplies before changing OBS output size. An unavailable input signal or unsupported native mode is not repaired by increasing the recording resolution or renaming a completed file as 4K.

Choose a supported native input mode

The documented Windows Video Capture Device properties include Resolution/FPS Type, Resolution and FPS. Device Default uses the device’s reported behavior; Custom permits supported explicit choices. If a device cannot supply the requested resolution or rate, the source may not display the expected signal. Do not assume identical labels or capabilities for every platform or capture driver.

Inspect Video Format, color space and range where they are available and relevant to the actual signal. Change one justified variable at a time. Choosing a larger number without verifying the device’s supported combination can replace a working capture with an unavailable or unsuitable input rather than improve the captured scene.

Verify source presentation and saved movie separately

Check the source in the intended scene, including framing, rotation and meaningful detail. A transform can enlarge a small captured image to fill a larger canvas without adding observations. Compare the known reference scene instead of judging only whether the output window is filled.

Record a short authorized sample and open the actual output independently. Inspect its dimensions, rate and content, then compare text, moving edges and sound with the input’s known behavior. A metadata inspector verifies encoded properties, while the source comparison determines whether those properties represent genuine detail or a scaled presentation.

Keep an honest capture and delivery record

Retain the accepted input mode and output settings as separate facts. Verify the target receiver’s playback, duration and required soundtrack, because a visible source preview does not certify the final recording. Preserve any existing original recording when this is a permitted secondary capture rather than the original production acquisition.

SocialVidDownloader does not configure capture cards or certify original camera resolution from a file label. Its genuine format inventory and local utilities remain unchanged. Leave unavailable native modes or unacceptable samples unapproved, and describe a scaled derivative accurately instead of promising that output dimensions recovered source detail the input never supplied.

Worked example

Example: a camera supplies a smaller supported input while the recording canvas is larger. The saved movie reports the large output dimensions but its fine text remains limited by the input. The reviewer records both stages and does not market the scaled file as newly captured high-resolution detail.
