PCM bit depth versus compressed audio: inspect the right measurement
PCM bit depth describes the precision used to represent individual audio samples. It differs from sample rate and from the encoded bitrate of AAC, Opus or another compressed stream. An editor's floating-point working format is another layer again: importing a compressed soundtrack into a high-precision project does not restore information that the source discarded.

Separate three numbers before comparing files
Sample rate counts samples over time. PCM bit depth concerns the representation of each sample's amplitude. Encoded bitrate describes data used per unit of time. Asking whether 24-bit is better than 192 kb/s compares different properties rather than two competing quality settings.
Inspect the codec as well as the displayed numbers. A compressed source stream is not described completely by the integer PCM depth an editor uses after decoding it. Keep the source codec, rate and channels in the archive notes, and record the editor format separately. Avoid replacing genuine source metadata with a more impressive number from a later processing stage.
Understand integer samples and a floating-point project
For integer PCM, additional bits allow finer sample-value representation. That matters to quantization and processing decisions, but it does not establish the quality of the microphone, recording environment or earlier encoding. A high-depth file can still contain noise, poor speech capture or existing distortion.
Audio editors can work with floating-point samples to support processing. Audacity documents its sample formats and conversion behavior. A floating-point project should be understood as a working representation, not proof that the uploader captured the recording at that precision. Keep intermediate processing files distinct from the retained source and the final delivery copy.
Choose export settings for the receiving workflow
Read the receiving application's requirements before converting. A particular workflow may need PCM audio at a specified sample rate and depth, while a different recipient may expect compressed audio inside a video container. Meeting that requirement is a compatibility task; it is not a guarantee of improved audible detail.
Conversion between representations can require rounding and other processing. Where the external editor provides dithering or conversion controls, follow its documented guidance rather than inventing a universal setting. Preserve a source copy, record the actual output settings and avoid repeated unnecessary conversions. This downloader does not offer a PCM mastering or bit-depth enhancement feature through its language selector.
Verify sound and metadata after external processing
Inspect the exported stream information and listen to quiet speech, pauses and strong transients. Confirm the intended duration, channel layout and synchronization as well as the format. If output metadata says 24-bit PCM, that describes the exported representation; it cannot certify what existed before a source was compressed.
If a conversion sounds distorted, compare against the unchanged source at the same monitoring volume. Investigate gain, clipping and the export path instead of assuming that adding bits repairs the signal. Keep the delivered copy's settings and processing history available to the recipient. A technically compatible handoff and a faithful archive are useful goals, but they require evidence beyond the largest displayed number.
Worked example
An authorized AAC soundtrack is decoded into a floating-point editing project, then exported as 24-bit PCM for a recipient. The export may satisfy that recipient's editing requirement. It remains derived from the AAC recording, with any information already lost in that source still absent. Keep the original AAC-bearing file and describe the PCM file as a processing derivative, not a recovered studio master.
