Premiere media cache: clean generated files, retain the source

Identify the actual cache and source locations

Keep the authorized source movies, separate audio and a recoverable project version. Inspect the configured Media Cache location in the installed application, rather than assuming every folder near a project is disposable. Adobe identifies generated resources such as conformed-audio and peak files in this processing area; their role differs from originals and editable production state.

Distinguish this cache from proxies, rendered intermediates and project backups. A similarly named folder or a large file is not sufficient evidence of its purpose. If the only usable recording is unresolved or offline, preserve all potentially needed artifacts while identifying the source instead of clearing directories broadly to make a warning disappear.

Use the native preferences and review cleanup scope

Adobe’s current route is Edit > Preferences > Media Cache on Windows or Premiere > Settings > Media Cache on macOS. Its cleanup control is Delete beside Remove Media Cache Files. Inspect the installed dialog’s actual scope and keep the intended cache location clear before confirming; this is not a command to remove the source-media directory.

Review automatic cache-management settings when relevant. Age or size policies can remove generated resources according to the configured conditions. Do not assume an enabled policy is a camera-backup retention plan or that a default threshold suits every production. Keep source retention and project recovery under their separate requirements.

Investigate repeated conforming without guessing a single cause

When conforming recurs, check whether the intended cache location persists and is available with the account’s normal authorized access. Compare the source path and actual file identity across openings. A moved or changed source, an unavailable location and an intentionally removed cache are different observations; no one should be diagnosed solely from a progress indicator.

Read the relevant application status or log and retain only necessary sanitized evidence. Do not recursively grant unrelated folders broad write access or delete the only sound recording as a troubleshooting step. If cache generation is still unresolved, consult maintained support with the source and failure-stage context rather than repeatedly clearing the whole production.

Verify actual playback and retained resources

After the scoped action, open the intended project and listen to representative passages, including the final phrase. Check synchronization and the exact recording version. A newly drawn waveform or regenerated cache is not proof that the exported movie contains the required sound or that every project dependency is now available.

Verify a representative saved delivery separately when the task requires it. Preserve the source and project backups and record the cleanup scope or unresolved persistence issue. Worked example

Example: a project rebuilds audio cache after a configured cleanup removes old generated resources. The editor checks the actual cache policy and retained source and verifies playback.
