Verify a FLAC audio roundtrip without confusing file hashes
A FLAC roundtrip can preserve integer PCM audio samples while producing a WAV file with different whole-file bytes. Verify the encoded stream and compare the decoded audio against the retained source. Treat container metadata and archive checksums as separate checks rather than evidence of an audible change.

Establish a supported source and retain the original
Xiph documents FLAC support for linear integer PCM from 4 to 32 bits, rather than floating-point PCM. Confirm the actual source representation before applying this workflow. A filename ending in WAV does not establish the sample representation inside it.
Start with authorized local media, a known source and distinct output filenames in a controlled folder. Keep the original file. Do not overwrite it or enable an option that deletes the input; an independent reference is necessary for the later comparison.
Encoding an already lossy source into FLAC does not restore information discarded earlier. This check concerns preservation of the samples supplied to this encoding step. It cannot prove that an unknown source is a pristine recording or establish rights to use it.
Encode with verification and test the retained stream
For a supported source.wav, the command flac -V -o "retained.flac" "source.wav" enables encode verification. Xiph explains that verification decodes internally and compares the result with the input audio. Inspect the command result and any warnings before treating the output as accepted.
The separate command flac -t "retained.flac" tests an existing stream without writing a decoded audio file. The documented test checks decoding errors and a stored MD5 mismatch when that checksum is present. It does not compare an unrelated external source file for you.
Compression-level choices affect compression and processing effort rather than selecting a different lossless audio quality. Keep test results tied to the actual retained output. A label saying lossless is not a substitute for checking the file that will be handed over.
Check decoded audio when whole-file hashes differ
Decode to a new file with flac -d -o "restored.wav" "retained.flac". Confirm channel count, sample width, sample rate and sample count, then compare decoded PCM bytes against the supported source. These are audio-focused checks rather than a comparison of two complete container files.
Xiph explains that FLAC preserves audio but does not preserve every non-audio WAV chunk by default. Its tools document an explicit foreign-metadata preservation option with format requirements. If those chunks matter, plan and verify that separate requirement instead of assuming default decoding recreates the entire original file.
Whole-file archive hashes remain useful for exact copies of a retained artifact. A source WAV and a decoded WAV are different artifacts, however. Their hashes can differ because ancillary container data differs, even when the audio samples compare equal.
Use scoped evidence and record what was actually proved
A controlled local test used one second of mono, 44.1 kHz, 16-bit integer PCM. Verified encoding, standalone testing and decoding all succeeded. The decoded parameters and PCM bytes matched the source, while whole-file hashes differed after a deliberately added ancillary JUNK chunk was omitted by the default roundtrip.
A truncated copy failed the standalone integrity test, providing a negative check. This is evidence for that synthetic fixture and installed FLAC tool, not a live platform download or a guarantee covering every metadata layout. The unchanged source was retained throughout.
Record the input identity, tool version, accepted commands and comparison scope. SocialVidDownloader does not promise a FLAC format choice from every provider. This external verification task applies to permitted local audio and distinguishes sample preservation, stream integrity and complete-file archival requirements.
Worked example
Worked local check: a WAV contains known integer PCM plus an ancillary archive note. Its FLAC roundtrip passes verification and returns identical decoded audio bytes, but the default restored WAV omits that note. The result passes the audio-preservation check and requires a separate decision about ancillary metadata preservation.
