Video color fields: primaries, transfer and matrix interpretation
Color primaries, transfer characteristics and matrix coefficients describe different parts of a video interpretation. A primaries label does not define the entire HDR behavior, and changing a metadata tag is not the same as converting pixel values. Inspect the source evidence and intended receiver before assigning new color labels.

Read the three fields without collapsing their meanings
Primaries identify a color-coordinate convention, transfer characteristics describe the relationship used to encode or interpret signal values, and matrix coefficients describe a conversion relationship between color representations such as luma/chroma and RGB. Range is another field. None of these is simply a synonym for resolution, bitrate or the quality of a camera recording.
For a retained local source, an illustrative inspection command is ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_streams -of json source.mp4. FFprobe reports matrix context as color_space in this stream view. Inspect the selected motion stream and retain the original; a missing or unknown field is uncertainty, not permission to select a familiar label automatically.
Separate a justified metadata correction from conversion
If known production notes establish that a tag is wrong, a scoped metadata correction can change how a receiver interprets the same stored values. If the target requires another color representation, an appropriate conversion changes values according to the source and destination interpretation. Copying streams with new tags alone does not perform that color transform.
Container and encoded-bitstream descriptions can also disagree. Determine which evidence the target receiver uses and check both layers with a suitable inspector when the handoff depends on that detail. Do not infer the true source interpretation solely from one attractive screenshot: viewing applications can add their own conversion, tone mapping or display management.
Verify the picture in its actual receiving path
Compare skin tones, saturated objects, dark areas and highlight detail in a controlled receiving environment. Keep the source version and viewing settings stable. If only one player changes the picture, investigate that receiver before permanently rewriting source tags. If a conversion is needed, test a short labelled derivative with the full intended output settings.
Inspect the saved derivative's reported interpretation and compare its meaningful content, not just whether a color flag is present. Missing source information may require producer clarification rather than a universal correction command. SocialVidDownloader's format and quality choices do not provide arbitrary color-calibration or metadata-repair controls. Keep the retained source and document any external transform separately; a changed color label or larger resolution cannot certify recovered highlight information or faithful display across every device.
Worked example
Example: a local stream reports unfamiliar matrix information while a receiving editor assumes a different YCbCr interpretation. Compare producer notes, stream fields and the receiver's input interpretation before exporting. A derivative that looks acceptable on one screen is not proof that replacing the tag repaired every color-management path.
