AAC versus Opus: choose a usable source audio stream

AAC and Opus are audio codecs. Compare them within the actual container, channel layout, and receiving player's support. A bitrate number alone does not identify the better recording, and choosing a different codec does not create a missing language or restore information already lost in the source.

Separate recording choice from compression choice

An alternate-language track is a different recording; a codec describes how a recording is encoded. Inspect the returned audio stream's language information and listen where possible before comparing compression formats. A translated title is not evidence of an alternate soundtrack.

AAC and Opus can appear with different video and container combinations. The tool's real inventory constrains what can be selected. Do not promise Opus, AAC, or an audio-only file simply because those names are familiar. Where the rate is unknown, do not substitute a fabricated value to make the choice appear precise.

Compare compatibility and sound in context

Check the complete combination accepted by the target application. A player may support one codec in one container while a receiving editor or device has narrower requirements. Test a complete authorized copy rather than relying only on the website preview.

Listen to equivalent passages when comparing quality. Source noise, clipping, and previous compression can dominate what you hear. Rates across codecs are not a universal ranking. More channels or a larger nominal bitrate also does not prove better sound for every task. Use intelligibility, fidelity to the available source, and reliable playback as practical checks without inventing benchmark results.

Troubleshoot silence and conversion assumptions

If sound is absent, verify the stream exists and is enabled, then check codec support and volume. A missing stream and an undecodable stream require different responses. Where the source offers another suitable audio option, select it and test the resulting file.

Stream-copy merging does not automatically convert Opus into AAC. Transcoding would create a newly encoded stream and cannot recover lost source detail. Renaming an audio filename changes neither its codec nor its language. For multiple-track outputs, test every requested stream in a player with alternate selection. Preserve the actual codec, container, selected recording, and playback result when seeking help. Those facts identify a compatibility or selection problem more usefully than assuming a higher bitrate will fix everything.

Worked example

Illustrative case: a video with Opus audio shows pictures but no sound in the receiving application, while a compatible player plays it fully. An actual available AAC combination may suit that application. A fake AAC label on the unchanged file would not solve its decoding limit.
