Chroma siting: investigate shifted color at picture edges

Chroma subsampling describes the relative density of color samples; chroma siting describes their placement relative to luma samples. Two files can share a subsampling label yet require different placement interpretation. Investigate a shifted color edge through the actual conversion and viewing path rather than assuming that a larger resolution restores the source.

Choose a controlled edge comparison

Retain the unchanged recording and inspect a high-contrast colored object at an identifiable frame. Compare the same frame in the original and derivative at a similar viewing scale. Avoid using unrelated thumbnails or screenshots that have already undergone different resizing. Distinguish a displaced color boundary from softness caused by limited color-sample density.

Record pixel format and any reported chroma-location information through an appropriate inspector. Missing location metadata can leave a receiver using its own assumptions. The subsampling designation alone does not resolve the phase of sample placement or explain every colored fringe, because sharpening, compression and other processing can also affect edges.

Trace conversion assumptions before changing tags

Review the input interpretation and output requirements in the actual resampling or conversion tool. Scaling and color conversion need consistent placement assumptions. A tag change tells a receiver to interpret the same stored data differently; resampling changes the representation itself. Do not apply both without identifying which operation the source and target require.

If the source is known and a tool offers explicit input and output chroma-location settings, follow its installed documentation and test a short derivative. FFmpeg documents chroma-position controls in its scaling workflow. There is no single corrective number appropriate to every codec, source history and receiver, so preserve the original while comparing the specific path.

Verify representative edges and the delivery

Inspect multiple colored boundaries and moving shots after export. Check whether an apparent improvement at one object caused another shift, ringing or loss of useful detail elsewhere. Review the saved file in the intended receiver, since a clean editor preview can hide a later conversion or a different decoder assumption.

Document any explicit placement interpretation or resampling applied and keep the derivative separate from the retained source. A 4:4:4 export cannot recover color samples already absent from a subsampled input. SocialVidDownloader does not expose chroma-siting repair or guarantee reconstruction of original camera color detail. Its genuine source quality options remain separate from this external technical conversion diagnosis, and unresolved edge differences should be described without claiming a universal restoration.

Worked example

Example: a colored line appears slightly displaced from its luma edge only after a resize. Compare source and derivative on the same frame, inspect chroma-location assumptions and test the documented conversion path. Merely renaming the output or choosing a larger raster does not establish that the sample-placement mismatch was resolved.
