Keep Cinematic focus controls in an iPhone-to-Mac handoff
A Cinematic mode handoff needs the depth and focus information required by the receiving editor, not merely a movie that plays. Process the genuine iPhone Cinematic clip before transfer and use Apple’s documented metadata-preserving route. Verify the intended controls on the receiving Mac before replacing the working source.

Define whether the recipient needs adjustable focus
Ask whether the task is viewing the accepted appearance or changing focus and depth of field during editing. Those requirements describe different deliverables. A viewing export can look correct while failing the adjustable-input requirement.
Confirm that the source was actually recorded in Cinematic mode and remains available in its supported source workflow. An ordinary social-media rendition with a similar blur effect is not proof that the necessary acquisition information exists. A filename containing Cinematic cannot establish that provenance.
Keep source and viewing copies separately identified. If only a flattened delivery is available, describe the limitation and ask the owner for a suitable permitted source. Renaming or transcoding the viewing copy cannot establish missing depth and focus metadata.
Check processing before transferring the source
Apple states that Photos on iPhone must process Cinematic clips before import to retain depth and focus for Mac editing. Its current route is Photos → Collections → Cinematic under Media Types, then Process Now. If that action is absent, the clips have already been processed according to the instructions.
Identify the exact clip to be transferred rather than assuming every item from the same session has been prepared. Preserve the current recording while checking it. The existence of a thumbnail or an earlier exported movie does not verify the editable source.
Agree on the receiving editor and its supported installed workflow. Apple documents editing with its compatible Mac applications; that guidance is not a promise that every third-party importer understands the same resources. Test the actual intended application before a larger handoff.
Retain the documented AirDrop resource set
For the documented AirDrop route, Apple instructs enabling All Photos Data in the Share options each time before transfer. A receiving folder containing four files is described for each Cinematic clip. Apple identifies the MOV without the IMG_E prefix as the clip to import into Final Cut Pro or iMovie.
Keep the received folder together while testing. Do not discard unfamiliar companions simply because one movie opens in a viewer. Successful ordinary playback does not decide which resources the receiving edit needs.
Check the actual destination and recording identity. A similarly named MOV from a previous viewing export can be the wrong input even when the scene resembles the source. Transfer notes should identify which resource set was supplied and which item was imported.
Verify editable controls and separate other failures
Open the intended input in the receiving editor and verify that its Cinematic focus and depth controls are available for the actual task. Preserve the source while investigating an absent control. A completed file transfer is weaker evidence than a demonstrated receiving edit.
Keep photo-library access, local original availability and color interpretation separate from focus metadata. A missing library entry or an unexpected HDR appearance can have another cause. Use the corresponding library-access or HDR guide when that is the actual observation rather than treating every issue as lost focus data.
Record the accepted input and any viewing derivative separately. SocialVidDownloader does not retrieve camera Cinematic resource packages or reconstruct absent depth measurements. This external owner-source workflow supports a checked editable handoff; it does not convert an ordinary platform movie into a verified acquisition original.
Worked example
Illustrative handoff: a recipient can play a blurred viewing movie but cannot change its focus. The owner retains the genuine processed Cinematic source, transfers it with the documented All Photos Data option and keeps the received folder intact. The recipient checks the focus controls on that input rather than judging editability from playback alone.
