ProRes versus ProRes RAW in an editing handoff
ProRes and ProRes RAW are different receiving requirements, even when both arrive in a similarly named video file. Identify the exact codec and whether the recipient needs processed pictures or camera RAW data. A retained social-media rendition cannot be converted back into the sensor data that was never supplied.

Ask which artifact the recipient needs
A collaborator may ask for a viewing copy, editable processed footage or the camera acquisition recording. Clarify that request before choosing an export. Supplying a large movie does not establish that the requested RAW controls survived.
Apple describes conventional ProRes variants for processed image workflows and ProRes RAW for camera sensor data. In a RAW workflow, image processing such as demosaicing is part of turning that data into visible pictures. The two names therefore describe more than a choice between small and large versions of one ordinary playback file.
Inspect the supplied file and the creator’s acquisition or export notes. A MOV suffix does not identify the enclosed codec, and a filename containing RAW is not proof. Ask the supplier to confirm uncertain media rather than assigning a production history from appearance.
Separate processed variants from the RAW family
Apple lists conventional variants including ProRes 422, 422 HQ, LT, Proxy and 4444. Their purposes and encoding properties differ. A proxy-oriented version is not automatically the full-quality project source; use the existing proxy correspondence guide for that separate attachment task.
Apple documents ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ as two RAW compression levels, with data rates that vary with image content. Avoid promising one universal bitrate or file size for a RAW recording. The exact source and required receiving workflow determine the handoff.
Keep alpha-channel requirements separate too. A motion-graphics overlay needing transparency should be checked through the alpha guide, not treated as camera RAW because it carries extra production information. State whether the asset is a camera source, processed edit or compositing element.
Check the receiving application before transferring a large source
Use current documentation for the recipient’s actual application and installed version. Apple’s ProRes RAW help describes viewing on Mac with Pro Video Formats and notes that QuickTime Player cannot export RAW to other formats. Opening and converting are separate capabilities.
Test a representative authorized clip through the intended import and grading path before a large handoff. Confirm recognizable content, duration and the controls required by the editor. A file appearing in a bin is weaker evidence than the recipient successfully using its required image-processing workflow.
A RAW preview can also depend on how sensor data is interpreted for display. Do not diagnose bright or unexpected pictures solely as transfer damage. Preserve the source while checking the documented interpretation and the creator’s intended reference.
Do not call a transcode recovered camera RAW
Apple identifies ProRes RAW as an acquisition format and says video software cannot create it from ordinary processed footage. Exporting a downloaded platform video into a conventional editing codec can be a useful compatibility operation, but it cannot reconstruct absent sensor measurements.
If the project genuinely requires acquisition data, request the authorized camera recording from its owner. If only the platform rendition is available, describe that limitation and agree on a processed editing handoff. Larger dimensions, a higher bitrate or a RAW-looking filename cannot settle the missing-source problem.
Keep any permitted transcode under a separate identity. Record its input and actual export settings so a later reviewer knows it is a derivative. Do not overwrite the retained platform copy while preparing a more convenient editing representation.
Verify and label the actual handoff
For processed footage, inspect the exported encoding, picture, soundtrack and duration in the recipient’s editor. For an acquired RAW recording, verify the intended RAW import and reference appearance. Keep these checks tied to the exact supplied version rather than a broad claim that every ProRes file works everywhere.
Preserve source context and any relevant color interpretation notes with the authorized asset. A reference viewing movie can help explain the desired look, but it should be labelled separately from media the recipient is expected to grade.
SocialVidDownloader does not offer camera RAW retrieval, custom ProRes export or grading controls. Its real source format inventory is a different workflow. Download only recordings you own or have permission to save, and state which source information remains unavailable.
Worked example
Illustrative decision: an editor requests the creator’s ProRes RAW camera source, but the supplied MP4 is a social-media edit. Converting that MP4 into a conventional ProRes editing file may meet an agreed compatibility task; it does not meet the RAW acquisition request. The collaborators either arrange an authorized camera-source handoff or record the limitation.
