Separate alpha companions: retain geometry and matching timing
An alpha companion is a separate transparency resource, not a complete movie or a background-removal result. Extract an existing alpha plane only when the source supplies it, and retain the matching foreground, dimensions and timing. When reassembling the pair, verify the actual mask interpretation and receiving codec rather than assuming two similarly named files belong together.

Identify the source alpha and intended companion roles
Retain the authorized compositing source and inspect its actual pixel representation. Test its alpha in a compatible viewer or editor. A black playback background is not proof of transparent pixels, while a flattened movie cannot acquire the original creator’s transparency merely through alpha extraction.
Record the intended frame dimensions, interval and color-versus-alpha representation. For a two-resource delivery, keep the foreground and matte identities together. A companion from another render version can have the same dimensions but different movement or timing. Separate audio and captions are additional resources; an alpha-only companion is not their archive.
Extract a scoped matte with a suitable representation
Check the installed filter with ffmpeg -h filter=alphaextract. For a known source with an existing eight-bit alpha plane, an illustrative bounded test is ffmpeg -n -i source-alpha.mov -t 5 -map 0:v:0 -vf alphaextract -an -c:v ffv1 -pix_fmt gray review-matte.mkv. This deliberately chooses an eight-bit grayscale companion and a new file. It is not a precision-preserving recipe for every higher-bit-depth source.
Inspect the saved matte. White ordinarily represents opacity, black transparency and intermediate values partial transparency in the intended alpha interpretation. Confirm that the source actually supplied useful values and that the chosen derivative retained the required distinctions. Keep the original rather than interpreting an entirely opaque result as successful recovery of missing transparency.
Reassemble only a matched foreground and matte
FFmpeg’s alphamerge copies the second input’s luma values into the first input’s alpha. A matched, supported eight-bit test can use ffmpeg -n -i foreground.mov -i review-matte.mkv -filter_complex "[0:v:0] [1:v:0] alphamerge=shortest=1: repeatlast=0[v]" -map "[v]" -c:v ffv1 -pix_fmt bgra review-alpha.mkv. Confirm the installed encoder and receiver support. This selects a video-only reconstructed derivative, not every input resource.
The example stops at the shorter input and avoids extending the last matte frame. That policy is intentional, not proof of complete matched duration. Compare the actual time origins, frames and dimensions before processing. Timestamp resets alone cannot make different source events align, and changing an opaque foreground’s metadata cannot recreate the color/alpha relationship missing from an unsuitable pair.
Verify the saved composition and retain the reusable source
Inspect the reconstructed alpha and place the output over contrasting and intended backgrounds in the actual receiving editor. Review moving edges, fades and partial transparency at more than one point. Check straight versus premultiplied interpretation separately when fringes occur; a correctly copied matte can coexist with an incorrectly interpreted color relationship.
Record the retained source, companion identity, precision choice and tested interval. Keep a flattened review copy distinct from the reusable element and preserve unresolved geometry or timing differences. SocialVidDownloader does not expose arbitrary alpha-plane extraction, reconstruction or background removal. This is an external authorized compositing handoff whose success depends on actual source transparency and matched receiving behavior.
Worked example
Example: a five-second eight-bit logo animation supplies real alpha. Its extracted matte is retained with the matching foreground and checked through a supported reconstruction. A matte from an earlier animation version is rejected despite matching dimensions, because the moving edge no longer follows the same action.
