Debanding: check gradients and fine detail in the saved video

Debanding can change small color or luminance differences to reduce visible steps in gradients. That smoothing can also change fine texture and meaningful detail. Test the actual saved derivative at a useful viewing size, and do not describe newly smoothed pixels as recovered original color precision.

Identify the gradient and competing detail

Retain the authorized source and choose a passage showing the suspected banding alongside fine detail, such as text, fabric or a dim textured wall. Compare the source in an appropriate receiver before concluding that every visible step is baked into its pixels. Display processing or a later compressed preview can affect what you see.

Record the actual input and intended output representation, including relevant bit depth and color interpretation. Increasing an output’s nominal precision does not reconstruct source values already discarded. Keep a reference for the whole passage rather than a conveniently smooth crop that conceals nearby texture loss.

Render a scoped native filter comparison

Check ffmpeg -h filter=deband. An illustrative bounded test is ffmpeg -n -t 5 -i source.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -vf "deband=1thr=0.01: 2thr=0.01: 3thr=0.01: range=8" -an -c:v libx264 review-deband.mp4. These are example plane thresholds and a sampling-range choice, not a recommended preset for every source or pixel format. The new output is selected video only.

Inspect which planes and representation the filter actually processes. Change one justified control at a time when comparing tests; larger thresholds or different sampling choices can alter more than the originally noticed gradient. Keep the output encoder and other settings consistent enough that an unrelated encoding change is not mistaken for the filter’s effect.

Verify detail preservation and receiving appearance

Open the saved derivative and compare the same gradient, text and textures against the retained source. Review movement as well as a paused frame. A smooth region can look improved while an important label or natural grain becomes less distinct. Check scene transitions and dark passages so a favorable one-frame example does not stand in for the whole interval.

Inspect the actual output properties and receiver behavior. If the derivative is useful, label the intentional smoothing and retain the source for a different delivery requirement. Do not promise lossless restoration, extra captured detail or corrected HDR interpretation from a deband filter. Required sound and captions need separate explicit retention and timing checks. SocialVidDownloader does not certify arbitrary native debanding settings as source recovery; this is a bounded external picture treatment accepted only for the content and receiving path actually reviewed.

Worked example

Example: a sky gradient looks less stepped after treatment, but small writing on a nearby sign becomes softer. The reviewer compares a lighter setting or rejects the derivative, retaining the original. The smoother sky alone is never used as evidence that all detail or lost precision was restored.
