Color conversion: transform pixels and verify the declared output

A color-space conversion transforms pixel values according to an input and output interpretation. Setting a metadata label alone is a different operation. Establish the real source context before overriding its fields, then check both transformed pictures and output declarations rather than treating a changed tag as proof of a correct conversion.

Identify the input interpretation independently

Retain the authorized original and inspect primaries, transfer, matrix and range with a suitable media tool and production notes. These fields describe different relationships. A matrix change between encoded component representations is not automatically the same task as mapping between color primaries, and a range label does not by itself rescale stored values.

Do not infer the complete source interpretation from dimensions or a flat-looking preview. If a field is wrong or absent, obtain a justified context rather than forcing familiar labels. Preserve uncertainty for an unknown source. A corrected metadata declaration and a deliberate pixel transformation should be recorded separately because they can produce different receiving behavior.

Render a bounded conversion under explicit assumptions

For a genuinely known eight-bit SDR, limited-range BT.601-625 source with compatible dimensions, an illustrative test is ffmpeg -n -t 5 -i source.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -vf "colorspace=iall=bt601-6-625: all=bt709: irange=tv: range=tv" -an -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709 review-color.mp4. The input override requires actual source evidence; it is not a universal fix for every SD or phone recording.

The filter performs the selected transformation, while the output codec options declare the intended interpretation. This explicitly selected video-only derivative changes representation and re-encodes pictures. It is not a stream-copy operation, HDR tone-mapping recipe or precision-preserving command for arbitrary higher-bit-depth sources. Check the installed filter and actual errors before accepting any artifact.

Verify meaningful picture and metadata together

Inspect the saved output fields, range and pixel format, then compare important colors and detail in the intended receiver. Include skin tones, color-coded labels, highlights and dark content rather than relying on a more saturated thumbnail. A receiving display transform can affect appearance separately from the encoded file’s declarations.

If tags and expected picture disagree, investigate the processing chain and source assumptions instead of repeatedly relabeling values. A changed range or gamut can lose distinctions, and no conversion restores source values already clipped or discarded. Keep the original, accepted command and reviewed context. Required audio and captions need separate retention and synchronization checks. SocialVidDownloader does not certify professional color conversion or every native graph; its actual converter output must remain distinct from an external source-qualified transformation and its receiving review.

Worked example

Example: an authorized production source is documented as limited-range BT.601-625. A bounded conversion targets BT.709 and its actual fields and meaningful colors are checked. An unknown phone movie is not assigned those input assumptions merely because it has a similar raster or looks washed out in one player.
