Timed FFmpeg overlays: verify origins, alpha and the ending
An overlay’s visibility depends on the media timeline at its filter input, not just its x and y position. Identify both source origins, required alpha interpretation and ending policy before applying a timed overlay. A well-positioned image can still arrive at the wrong event or remain visible after its intended end.

Identify the background and overlay resources
Retain the authorized background and foreground assets and establish their roles. A static image, animated foreground movie and already flattened logo have different timing and transparency properties. Inspect the actual alpha and source version; a black preview cannot prove that a foreground is transparent.
Record whether both assets are meant to start together or whether the foreground corresponds to a later event. Resetting origins alone cannot align independently captured action. Choose the required start and ending explicitly, and keep color interpretation and pixel precision with the source notes rather than treating every conversion to a convenient format as unchanged media.
Render an explicitly scoped native graph
For compatible eight-bit SDR input and a five-second animated foreground with the intended straight-alpha representation, an illustrative test is ffmpeg -n -t 5 -i background.mp4 -t 5 -i foreground.mov -filter_complex "[0:v:0] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[b]; [1:v:0] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[f]; [b] [f] overlay=x=10: y=10: enable='between(t,1,3)': alpha=straight: eof_action=pass: repeatlast=0[v]" -map "[v]" -an -c:v libx264 review-overlay.mp4. The actual resources must meet those assumptions.
This example deliberately tests local seconds one through three and does not retain sound. An animated input is not a universally interchangeable static-image input: a one-frame resource needs an appropriate duration or repeat policy. The explicit foreground end handling prevents blindly extending its last frame, but does not prove that its first frame corresponds to the intended background event.
Verify format negotiation and the saved presentation
Check the installed overlay options and actual accepted pixel path. Format negotiation or conversion can affect alpha, subsampling and precision. A supported filter output is not evidence that HDR interpretation or every source value was retained. When a foreground is premultiplied, review the corresponding interpretation rather than forcing the straight-alpha example onto it.
Open the saved derivative and watch before, during and after the overlay interval. Inspect text, semitransparent edges and the foreground’s motion over the actual background. Check both media endings and the final composite duration. If the asset vanishes early, repeats unintentionally or appears with a fringe, diagnose its resource duration, origin and interpretation rather than simply moving it to a different corner.
Retain source roles and complete delivery requirements
For a complete movie, map the required authorized sound deliberately and verify it against the accepted picture timeline. Captions and other resources need their own scope review. Keep the original foreground and background for later changes and label the composite as rendered picture rather than a retained editable overlay package.
SocialVidDownloader has working local watermark tools, but it does not expose this arbitrary timed two-video FFmpeg graph or certify every alpha and color convention. The native example is an external bounded procedure. Preserve actual processing failures and unresolved origin differences rather than reporting a plausible preview as a verified completed output.
Worked example
Example: an animated logo starts correctly but its last frame is repeated past the intended interval by an unchecked default. The editor selects a deliberate ending policy, checks the actual saved timeline and retains the reusable asset separately. Correct corner placement alone never establishes accepted timing or transparency.
