FFmpeg default-track flags: hints are not new audio or captions

A stream disposition is a receiver hint attached to an existing resource. Marking an audio stream as default does not translate it, add a missing soundtrack or force every player to ignore a saved language preference. Inspect the actual tracks and use a checked derivative when changing their selection hints.

Identify tracks by content and output order

Retain the original and inspect all streams with FFprobe, including their indices, codec, language tags and disposition fields. Compare recognizable speech where you have permission to review it. A missing or incorrect language label is not enough evidence to infer that a second stream contains the desired recording.

Separate input stream indices from output type-relative indices. Explicit mapping determines which resources enter the output and their order. An output option targeting the second audio stream is not necessarily addressing input stream number one, because video, captions and other resources may precede or separate the audio tracks. Write down the actual intended mapping before editing flags.

Change only the intended default hints

For a compatible source with at least two audio tracks, an illustrative remux is ffmpeg -n -i source.mkv -map 0 -c copy -disposition:a:0 +default -disposition:a:1 -default review.mkv. The options target the first and second output audio streams. The prefixed additions and removals adjust the default flag while preserving other applicable flags, rather than replacing the entire disposition value.

This example is not appropriate when the streams do not exist or the output container cannot carry the mapped resources. Check every other audio track if the requirement is exactly one default; changing two tracks does not clear an already-default third. Role flags such as commentary or accessibility description represent existing content and should not be casually removed to make a selection list look simpler.

Verify receiver behavior and preserve truthful roles

Inspect the saved flags and open the derivative in the intended receiver with a known selection state. Check which soundtrack initially plays, then manually select the others to confirm they remain available and correctly identified. A player can apply its own language preference or remembered track, so observed automatic selection and the file’s default flag are separate evidence.

Check the intended spoken content and synchronization, not only a highlighted menu row. If a resource is absent, no default flag can create it. Caption visibility similarly depends on resource support and receiver controls, not an audio disposition alone. Keep the original and document the changed hints, mapping and actual test result. SocialVidDownloader’s language selection follows the real returned inventory; this external procedure must not be used to advertise unsupported dubbing, new languages or a universally forced playback choice.

Worked example

Example: a bilingual MKV has two actual audio tracks, but a recipient opens the commentary by default. A checked remux changes the default hint on the intended existing soundtrack and retains the commentary role. The reviewer still tests the recipient’s language preference rather than claiming that the flag forces every player’s choice.
