Two-step video stabilization: keep analysis tied to the source

A two-step stabilization workflow first analyzes motion and then uses that analysis to transform the pictures. The analysis file is a processing dependency, not a finished video. Keep it tied to the exact source and interval, and review the saved derivative’s geometry instead of treating reduced shake as proof that every original detail survived.

Check the installed workflow and retain the original

Keep the authorized source and identify the intended video stream, dimensions and interval. Use ffmpeg -h filter=vidstabdetect and ffmpeg -h filter=vidstabtransform to check the installed capabilities. These filters require an applicable build; an unavailable filter cannot be supplied by renaming an output or ignoring its error.

Choose a representative short passage and inspect its camera movement, scene cuts and meaningful subject motion. Intentional pans, a moving subject and camera shake are not interchangeable. A correction that makes a preview more stationary can still distort the intended scene or remove important edges. Keep the unchanged parent for comparison.

Retain motion analysis and apply it to the matching interval

For a source selected from its beginning, a bounded illustrative first pass is ffmpeg -i source.mp4 -t 10 -map 0:v:0 -vf "vidstabdetect=result=review-motion.trf" -an -f null -. This writes motion-analysis data while discarding the diagnostic video output. Use a dedicated writable directory and a distinct analysis path; the command is not a delivered movie or a complete source archive.

A matching second pass can use ffmpeg -n -i source.mp4 -t 10 -map 0:v:0 -vf "vidstabtransform=input=review-motion.trf" -an -c:v libx264 review-stabilized.mp4. It produces a separate video-only derivative. Do not reuse the analysis with a changed cut, different source stream or different interval while assuming its motion data still matches. Required sound and captions need their own explicit delivery mapping and timing review.

Verify motion, geometry and the actual receiving copy

Compare the derivative against the same source passage. Inspect moving objects, straight edges, scene boundaries and the frame corners. Stabilization can introduce cropping, exposed borders or changing scale, so check essential labels and action rather than only the center subject. Record any intentional loss of view as part of the derivative’s scope.

Inspect duration and the first and final frames. If a setting creates warping or hides relevant action, retain it as an unapproved test and revise the justified workflow rather than claiming automatic restoration. Preserve the motion file and accepted settings when reproducibility matters. SocialVidDownloader’s current stabilization utility uses its own bounded basic FFmpeg deshake operation; it is not this external vidstab two-pass interface and must not be advertised as professional universal stabilization. Neither path creates original picture content missing from the captured recording.

Worked example

Example: a ten-second camera shot is analyzed and transformed using a retained motion file. An editor then trims a different opening but accidentally reuses the old analysis. The reviewer rejects the mismatched derivative and repeats the scoped analysis for the actual interval before accepting crop and motion changes.
