Video crop and padding: inspect the intended picture bounds

Cropping removes part of a picture, while padding adds canvas around retained content. Identify the actual input raster and intended area before choosing coordinates. A black border is not automatically disposable, and a larger padded output does not contain newly captured detail outside the original frame.

Identify the picture and coordinate context

Inspect the decoded dimensions and any rotation or presentation interpretation relevant to the processing path. Stored raster, display shape and active picture can differ. Keep the source and choose an identifiable frame for planning rather than measuring coordinates on an unrelated thumbnail or an already resized screenshot.

Confirm what must remain visible: captions, a hand movement, a corner label or another instructional detail. A crop fitting one paused frame can remove a moving subject later. Review multiple moments before setting a global rectangle and record which representation supplied the coordinate measurements.

Choose removal or added canvas deliberately

For a known raster large enough to contain the requested area, an illustrative FFmpeg crop is crop=640:360:100:50, specifying output width, height and top-left offset under the filter’s documented coordinate rules. These numbers are an example for a suitable source, not a universal portrait or border-removal preset.

Padding changes the output canvas and positions retained content within it. Select a finite compatible output size and intended background without claiming that added pixels reconstruct a wider camera view. Automatic crop detection can propose bounds from dark regions, but a dark wall or intentional fade can be mistaken for a removable border. Review proposed coordinates against meaningful scenes before applying them.

Verify the saved result across the full required interval

Inspect output dimensions and view the actual saved derivative at normal speed. Check moving edges, on-screen text and the first and last relevant events. Confirm any paired captions or overlays remain correctly placed after the geometry change. An accepted coordinate expression is not proof that the intended information survived.

Retain the original and document the crop or canvas purpose. If the source is anamorphic, rotated or uses other display context, verify the receiving appearance separately from width and height. SocialVidDownloader does not expose every FFmpeg crop or pad coordinate control or guarantee automatic content-aware framing. Its local filters and other bounded tools must not be described as recovering picture regions that were never recorded.

Worked example

Example: an automatic border proposal fits the opening dark scene but later removes a measurement label at the edge. Compare the required later scene before accepting it. A padded replacement can create room for an approved layout, but it cannot restore the cropped-away source detail unless the retained original remains available.
