Delete generated Final Cut media without deleting the archive
Generated render files, optimized media and proxies serve different editing roles from the original recordings and library database backups. Select the actual cleanup scope and preserve usable originals before deleting generated resources. A smaller library is not evidence that the production archive remains complete.

Inventory originals, generated representations and backups
Select the intended library and inspect its Library Properties storage locations. Identify source media, generated cache and backups separately; they can reside in different locations. Preserve the authorized originals and recoverable project state before cleanup. A database backup does not include the source movie bytes, while a proxy is not automatically an equivalent production master.
Check a representative clip’s actual original availability, including externally stored media. If an original is missing and only a generated representation remains, do not assume that deleting it is harmless because the category normally can be regenerated. Establish the retained source and accepted archive requirements before reclaiming space.
Use the native generated-file command for the selected scope
Apple documents selecting the relevant library, event, project or clips and choosing File > Delete Generated [item] Files. In the dialog, inspect the requested categories rather than selecting everything by habit. Render cleanup can distinguish unused files from all render files at the supported scope; optimized and proxy deletion are separate choices.
Generated-file commands can affect external generated media as well as resources inside the library. Inspect the real scope and destination before confirming. Do not manually delete arbitrary package folders to imitate the command or equate generated-file cleanup with deleting an event or source recording. Use the installed version’s maintained native controls and preserve unrelated storage.
Verify playback and regeneration from the retained sources
After cleanup, open the intended project and check source availability, selected media representation and required sound. Render caches may be recreated as work continues, while deleted optimized or proxy representations require the supported regeneration workflow. Regeneration depends on usable originals; it cannot manufacture a source recording that was removed from all retained copies.
Check a representative completed export and confirm that important picture and sound remain correct. Keep cleanup notes identifying the categories and scope, along with independent source retention. If a warning appears, diagnose the particular missing resource rather than deleting more categories blindly. SocialVidDownloader does not manage Final Cut cache or recover deleted native source media. This cleanup is an application-storage task, and its success should be described by verified retained originals and usable output rather than reclaimed space alone.
Worked example
Example: a library’s proxies are large, but one interview’s original is offline. The operator first establishes an independently retained authorized source before deleting that proxy category. A different clip with a verified original can regenerate its editing representation; the distinction prevents a general cleanup from removing the only usable copy.
