Copy a Final Cut library with the media the recipient needs
A Final Cut library handoff needs the media and dependencies required by its projects, not just a library database backup. Choose the copy scope, collect externally stored assets where needed and test the destination library. Preserve the working source until the receiving edit has been verified.

Define the library and media roles before copying
Identify the library, events and projects needed by the recipient. Confirm whether the task requires original media, optimized representations, proxies or a finished viewing export. A playable review movie cannot replace editable project state, while a library entry cannot establish that every source file is included.
Apple documents that library copies can include selected original, optimized or proxy media, or the database only. Its automatic library backups include the database portion rather than media files. These are different retention artifacts, so inspect the choice instead of treating every library-shaped file as a complete footage archive.
Record the source storage locations and intended destination. For a permitted production handoff, also note resources supplied outside the library. Keep private credentials and expiring provider links out of that note; the receiving editor needs retained assets and appropriate authorized access.
Set storage scope and understand consolidation
Apple’s Consolidate command gathers selected media into the current library storage location. Library Properties controls the relevant storage locations. Select the required library, event, project or clips and review File → Consolidate item Media and the requested media types before starting.
The documented movement rule matters: consolidation out of a library to an external folder moves files, while consolidation from an external folder into a library or another external folder copies them. Do not assume every consolidation is a non-destructive copy of the same scope.
Choose the intended destination and preserve recoverable sources before rearranging storage. Optimized and proxy media can be generated when needed under the documented workflow; their inclusion does not make them identical to the retained source representation. Keep each role clear in the package notes.
Prepare the destination library deliberately
Apple documents selecting the library, then File → Copy to Library → New Library, naming it and choosing a location. The copy options include Copy media stored in external locations for media used outside the source library. Review that option when an independent receiving copy is required.
Use storage suitable for the installed Final Cut workflow. Apple’s move guidance specifies APFS for the external device used in its transfer steps. This is an application-library requirement, separate from whether an ordinary video file can be stored on a different receiver’s filesystem.
Do not erase a populated drive merely because its format differs. Another existing suitable destination can preserve both the working edit and unrelated drive contents. Treat formatting and library movement as separate deliberate storage tasks.
Check Motion content and other dependencies
Apple documents setting customized Motion content to In Library and consolidating it before a relevant library copy or move. Third-party plug-ins and content require separate tracking because they are not managed inside the Final Cut library. Check the developer’s compatibility guidance for the receiving environment.
Write down which dependencies are included, supplied separately or still unresolved. A title rendering correctly on the sender’s machine does not prove the receiving machine has the same resources. Likewise, a cached preview can hide a missing dependency until the recipient makes a change.
Keep distribution permission in view for media and resources. A source you are allowed to retain is not automatically cleared for every transfer or reuse. Supply only the assets the collaboration is authorized to receive.
Verify from the actual receiving location
Open the new destination library and inspect the required projects. Confirm that their source references use the intended supplied media, rather than silently depending on the sender’s original folders or connected drive. Use a controlled test while preserving the originals.
Play distinctive scenes, transitions and the ending. Check the required soundtrack, titles and captions where relevant. A library opening without an obvious warning is useful evidence but does not certify every project or dependency in the agreed scope.
If an item is missing, identify the particular source or resource before substituting another file. A similarly named clip, proxy or downloaded rendition can have different timing and content. Keep identity checks separate from successful file-location resolution.
Retain the handoff and archive according to their purposes
A checked library package supports the agreed editing task. It can still omit unused captures, earlier versions or independent backups. Keep those separately when the production archive needs them.
For exact copy evidence, compare the relevant source and destination artifacts using appropriate checksums. For practical usability, test the library and a representative delivery. These checks answer different questions and should remain distinct in the handoff record.
SocialVidDownloader can supply supported permitted media as an editing input. It does not collect Final Cut libraries, install plug-ins or certify a recipient’s project environment. Preserve the working edit until the handoff and any required restore test have succeeded.
Worked example
Illustrative handoff: an editor’s library refers to an interview on an external source volume and uses a customized Motion title. They prepare the destination with the documented external-media and Motion choices, record separately supplied plug-ins and test the copied library from its receiving location. Sending only an automatic database backup would not demonstrate that the interview bytes arrived.
