FCPXML handoffs: match the version and retain referenced media

FCPXML describes an edit and its references; it is not a substitute for every recording, font and plug-in needed to reconstruct that edit. Export the intended scope in a version the receiver supports, supply the necessary resources separately, and inspect the imported timeline against an accepted reference movie before calling the handoff complete.

Select the intended scope and export version

Select the required library, events, projects or clips in Final Cut; to export the open project, make its timeline active. Choose File > Export XML and select a destination. Apple’s export dialog includes Metadata View, which controls included metadata, and XML version choices for the current and two preceding versions.

Ask the recipient which FCPXML version its actual application accepts. Do not select an older version simply because its filename looks familiar. Apple notes that object tracking and Cinematic mode features introduced in Final Cut 10.6 require FCPXML 1.10 or later; that version and later use the .fcpxmld bundle extension.

Package references rather than assuming embedded originals

Retain the native library and authorized source media. Inventory externally stored sound, still images and video, along with custom fonts, Motion templates and plug-ins required by the edit. Apple’s backup guidance treats those resources separately from the XML description and a mastering movie.

Use clear source identities and a directory arrangement the receiving workflow can relink. A valid path in the sender’s XML can point to a volume that the recipient does not have. Renaming a different clip to satisfy that path can produce an apparently online timeline containing the wrong performance.

Test importing into a separate receiving project

Final Cut imports through File > Import > XML; another application has its own documented interchange path. Import into a separate test project or library so unsupported interpretation does not overwrite the accepted native edit. Preserve warnings and identify which referenced resources were resolved or remained absent.

Compare cuts, source in/out points, speed changes, audio contributions and important effects with the reference export. An imported timeline can have the expected duration while losing a mask or interpreting an effect differently. Review feature-dependent scenes deliberately rather than treating successful parsing as complete visual equivalence.

Verify version compromises and the final handoff

If an older interchange version is required, document any simplified or externally rendered elements and keep the richer parent. Test the actual resulting file in the recipient’s installed application; changing an extension or editing only a version label does not convert incompatible XML semantics.

Deliver the accepted XML or bundle, needed media, reference movie and concise dependency notes together. Include the application and interchange versions without exposing private account details. SocialVidDownloader does not import FCPXML, recover unavailable plug-ins or rebuild a native timeline from its viewing export. Keep incomplete resource resolution visible until the receiver can use the agreed edit.

Worked example

Example: a recipient accepts an older interchange version but a scene relies on object tracking. The editor retains the native parent, tests a compatible handoff and documents a deliberate rendered substitute where needed. A clean XML import message alone would not verify that tracked result.
