Move a Final Cut iPad project to Mac with its media

To continue a Final Cut iPad edit on a Mac, export the native project rather than only a finished movie. Include its media when the receiving Mac needs a self-contained handoff. After import, verify the actual timeline and resources before removing the iPad version; a playable reference export does not establish an editable transfer.

Export the project and choose media scope

In Final Cut Pro for iPad, use Share and choose Final Cut Pro for iPad Project. Turn on Include All Media when the receiving package should contain imported videos, audio and photos, including unused imported items. Turning that option off produces an offline project rather than automatically supplying the missing bytes later.

Check available storage and the intended project version before export. Unused imported material may matter for future revisions even when it contributes nothing to the current timeline. Conversely, an offline handoff needs a separate agreed media plan; its smaller size is not evidence that it contains everything needed for editing.

Transfer the completed package and import it on Mac

Tap Export, then use AirDrop or Save to Files through the supported transfer route. Wait for the package to finish copying. On Mac, double-click the received project or choose File > Import > Final Cut Pro for iPad Project. Name the destination in Save as Library; the import creates a separate Mac library.

Locate the completed package deliberately rather than opening an older item with the same name. For a cloud route, verify local retrieval before judging import failure. Keep the original project and the transferred package until the new library has been inspected, especially when several people are exchanging revisions.

Check the soundtrack and editing resources

Apple documents a specific soundtrack change: music supplied with the iPad subscription arrives as an ordinary AAC file and no longer adjusts dynamically to a changed project length. Its existing name, role, position and duration are retained. If the Mac edit becomes longer or shorter, listen to the new ending instead of assuming the previous adaptive behavior continues.

Open the timeline and inspect important titles, audio entrances, transitions and media availability. Compare recognizable scenes against a reference movie from the iPad edit. That reference helps identify a changed appearance, but it cannot replace an absent editable photo, sound or video resource.

Verify the accepted Mac version before cleanup

Make a small intended edit, save it, reopen the library and share a representative passage. Confirm that the Mac uses the expected media and that the soundtrack ending remains deliberate. Review required unused resources separately; successful playback of the current cut does not exercise every imported asset.

Record which project version was accepted and keep a recoverable source according to the project’s retention needs. This procedure establishes an iPad-to-Mac handoff, not unrestricted round-trip compatibility. SocialVidDownloader does not import Final Cut project packages or reconstruct editable timelines from a finished movie, so keep those native resources independently.

Worked example

Example: a transferred project opens correctly, but adding a scene on Mac leaves its imported subscription soundtrack too short. The editor adjusts the retained AAC arrangement and checks the ending; they do not assume the iPad soundtrack will dynamically extend inside the Mac project.
