Locate downloaded videos in Firefox

Firefox's Downloads panel and download history help you locate a saved video or identify an interrupted transfer. Inspect the matching entry and its location before downloading again. A history entry can survive a moved file, so confirm that the local copy exists and plays.

Find the recent transfer in the panel

Open the Downloads button or the browser menu's downloads view. Find the filename and inspect whether Firefox is transferring, has finished, or reports a problem. On desktop, the wider download history helps when an older item has disappeared from the recent-download panel.

Use the entry's folder action to find the saved copy. Labels and icons vary with version and operating system, so follow the location action rather than an assumed path. Note the actual filename, completion state, and destination. Those details distinguish your saved video from several attempts with similar names and from the title of the source post.

Separate saving from opening preferences

Firefox can use a configured download location or ask for a destination. Its handling settings also affect whether a media type opens with an application. Opening a player does not establish that you retained a permanent copy in the directory you expected.

Inspect the destination in Firefox settings, then check it in your file manager. A one-time destination choice can differ from the default. If a completed entry cannot reveal its file, search by name: the copy may have been renamed, moved, or removed after transfer. Browser history records a past event; it cannot restore missing media or replace an independent backup.

Check interruptions without clearing evidence

Keep the error text while inspecting storage and connectivity. A blocked transfer calls for reviewing the warning and source, not automatically overriding protections. Do not rename a partial temporary file and expect a valid video. Obtain a fresh authorized file if an earlier download link expired.

After a successful save, open the local copy and check playback near the beginning and end. A finished transfer with an unsupported codec is a playback issue; a transfer that never completed is a saving issue. Removing the history entry cannot fix either. Once the correct copy is verified, delete duplicates deliberately instead of relying on the browser's list to manage your folders.

Worked example

Illustrative case: Firefox lists a completed video from yesterday but its folder action cannot locate it. A filename search finds the copy in a project directory where it was moved. Another download would create unnecessary duplication rather than repair Firefox.
