HandBrake custom presets: retain settings without assuming track identity
A HandBrake custom preset retains encoding choices and resource-selection rules, not a universal recording identity or a complete saved job. Audio and subtitle selections can change with a new source. Preserve the preset and application context, inspect the actual resulting tracks and settings, and verify an encoded sample before relying on it for a batch.

Define the receiving purpose and retained setting context
Keep the authorized source and identify the intended device or editing handoff. Record the codec, picture dimensions, rate choice and required sound or caption behavior. A memorable preset name is organizational context, not proof that every selected recording meets those requirements.
Choose a representative short source with the resources that matter. A single-language test cannot demonstrate which alternate language a rule selects on another file. Record the application version and the actual options visible in that installation, particularly when the preset will move between machines.
Save and inspect the native preset rules
After choosing the intended main-window settings, use Save New Preset and complete the add dialog. Check the resulting saved entry before making it a default. Default selection affects subsequent work and does not independently verify an already queued item.
The official documentation explains that presets use audio and subtitle selection behavior rather than storing the exact selected source tracks. Inspect those behavior rules, then examine the actual Audio and Subtitles tabs after scanning each new source. Manually correct a selection that the rules cannot express before adding the job to the queue.
Check the native CLI import against the receiving version
For an authorized command-line handoff, inspect HandBrakeCLI --version and HandBrakeCLI --help on the receiving installation. The official reference documents --preset-import-file for JSON presets and --preset for a case-sensitive preset name. An illustrative five-second test is HandBrakeCLI --preset-import-file review-preset.json --preset "Review Preset" -i source.mp4 -o review-cli.mp4 --start-at seconds:0 --stop-at seconds:5. Use an unused output path and a source/title already verified for this test; these names are examples, not an executed result.
The CLI stop-at value is duration relative to start-at, not the graphical range's absolute end value. Inspect the imported settings and actual selected source tracks, then compare the saved CLI artifact with a native GUI sample of the same interval and intended settings. A preset import does not guarantee bit-identical encodes or silently reproduce an unrelated queued job. Keep reported failures and unavailable options unapproved instead of discarding the receiving-version evidence.
Transfer the preset and verify receiver availability
Use native preset import or export from the preset pane for an authorized backup or receiving installation. Preserve the exported preset separately from the source movie and queued job notes. It carries settings, not the missing source media, a downloaded language or a guaranteed encoder installation.
After import, inspect the resolved options on the receiving machine. A changed version or unavailable encoder can make an old expectation unsuitable. Do not accept the preset’s label as evidence that a hardware path or exact parameter is available; examine the actual selection and any reported errors.
Verify the real encoded result and batch scope
Encode a short representative interval under a new output name and inspect it independently. Check codec, dimensions, duration and meaningful scenes, then select and listen to required audio tracks and inspect captions. Confirm that the receiving application actually supports that output rather than merely recognizing its filename.
Review each queued item’s own settings where source needs differ. SocialVidDownloader does not import HandBrake presets or offer arbitrary native CLI encoder controls. This native workflow preserves a repeatable starting configuration, not a certificate of compatibility or a substitute for actual source-specific review. Keep the parent and preset version, and leave wrong-resource or unsupported results unapproved.
Worked example
Example: a saved preset uses a preferred-language rule, but a later source contains only one differently labeled track. The reviewer inspects the actual selected stream before queuing and verifies the spoken output rather than assuming the preset transferred the earlier file’s language selection.
