HandBrake source scans and previews are not completed encodes

Opening and scanning a source tells HandBrake what it can attempt to process; it does not create a completed movie. Select the intended title, review settings and run the actual encode to a distinct destination. A short live preview or recognized format is useful evidence within its scope, not proof that the entire delivery succeeded.

Open the authorized source and identify the actual title

Use HandBrake’s Open Source button or supported file drag-and-drop and wait for the scan. Confirm the shown source identity before choosing settings. This workflow concerns retained authorized, unprotected local media; it does not defeat protection or retrieve a private platform recording through an account preview.

Some sources contain multiple titles. Use the native Title control to choose the intended recording and compare recognizable content and duration. Do not assume the longest item is always the wanted movie. An editing project also needs a supported rendered media input; a project filename is not necessarily an encoded movie HandBrake can process.

Test a representative preview without calling it the archive

Open Preview from the toolbar. HandBrake’s documented controls choose a starting position and duration, then Live Preview makes a short test encode. Select a passage with meaningful motion and sound instead of accepting one static opening frame. Confirm which source and settings the sample uses.

A successful preview establishes only that selected interval and processing choice. It does not examine later damaged frames, every required track or the full output storage requirement. Keep the sample separate from the intended finished file. If it fails, identify the actual stage and selected resource instead of repeatedly scanning a different title without recording the change.

Start the intended encode and inspect the error stage

Confirm the real destination, source title, range and required audio or caption settings before using Start Encode or the supported queue workflow. Choose a new path and preserve previous accepted outputs. Wait for the specific job rather than treating a closed scan dialog or queue entry as completion. The separate queue guide explains retained job settings and per-item state.

When a source scans but encoding fails, inspect the relevant Activity Log and failure stage. Distinguish source opening, decoded content, encoder setup and destination writing. A format recognized during scanning is not a guarantee that every frame can be decoded and saved. Keep the selected input and job identity with the evidence, and sanitize private paths, names and unrelated information before sharing logs for support.

Verify the actual saved movie and report its scope

Locate the completed file and reopen it in the receiving application. Compare the intended opening, a distinctive later section and the ending. Listen to required sound and inspect actual duration. A short preview filename, partial output or another title’s earlier export must not be substituted for the required completed delivery.

If the output remains incomplete, retain that status and the source while resolving the particular failure through maintained support. Renaming an extension cannot repair missing media or supply an unsupported decoder. SocialVidDownloader does not run native HandBrake scans or interpret every external encoding error. Keep source access, scan recognition, bounded preview and verified full-file delivery as separate outcomes; that record is more useful than an unexplained assertion that conversion worked.

Worked example

Example: an authorized source offers a short introduction and a longer main title. Both scan, but a ten-second preview of the introduction is mistaken for a finished encode. The operator selects the intended title, starts the separate job and verifies its actual saved movie before marking the delivery complete.
