HDR metadata: static context, dynamic instructions and preservation

Static HDR metadata describes context that can apply across a program, while dynamic metadata can vary with scenes or frames in supported formats. Neither category reconstructs highlight detail absent from the encoded picture. Identify the actual HDR representation and receiver requirements before deciding what a remux or converted derivative must preserve.

Identify the picture and metadata roles

Record the source codec, transfer characteristics, bit depth and known HDR format using an appropriate inspector and production notes. Mastering-display information describes the mastering context, not the specifications of the recipient's physical screen. Content light-level metadata is also not a live brightness measurement taken from the user's display.

Dynamic systems, such as applicable HDR10+ or Dolby Vision workflows, have their own signaling and receiver requirements. Do not assume that detecting one generic HDR label proves every required metadata payload is present or valid. A base layer that decodes can still differ from the complete intended presentation when additional metadata or components are not supported.

Define what the receiving workflow must retain

For a preservation handoff, retain the unchanged permitted source and identify all representation components needed by its supported receiver. A stream-copy operation can preserve compressed picture data while changing surrounding container information. Re-encoding, filtering or conversion can change both pictures and metadata requirements; copied old metadata is not automatically correct for a changed image.

Check the actual tool's documented treatment of the specific HDR system before processing. Do not describe a file as retaining dynamic HDR merely because its filename or color-transfer tag stayed the same. If the recipient needs SDR, prepare and label an appropriate SDR derivative rather than pretending the original HDR presentation was retained unchanged.

Verify metadata and visible content together

Use a metadata-aware inspector appropriate to the HDR representation, then review the saved output in the intended compatible playback path. Include bright highlights, dark scenes and saturated colors rather than judging one opening shot. A generic player successfully opening the file is not a complete dynamic-metadata conformance test.

Record which representation, tools and receiver were checked and preserve any uncertainty. If a processing path does not retain required metadata, keep that result labelled accordingly and supply the retained source when authorized. SocialVidDownloader does not certify professional HDR preservation or offer a universal metadata-restoration workflow. The local video tools also must not be assumed to maintain every dynamic HDR system across all operations. A useful handoff states what was actually inspected and verified instead of equating a 4K label with correct HDR rendering.

Worked example

Example: a remuxed copy reports an HDR transfer characteristic but an HDR-aware inspector no longer finds required dynamic metadata. It may remain a playable HDR-like base representation, yet it is not a verified identical presentation. Retain the original and investigate the actual muxing path rather than declaring preservation from resolution and successful playback alone.
