Find Safari downloads on Mac and iPhone

Safari can display a video in a tab or save it as a file. Check its downloads view and the destination in Finder or Files to tell which happened. The controls differ between Mac and iPhone, so desktop instructions should not be assumed to apply on iOS.

Locate the saved item on Mac

Use Safari's downloads list to inspect recent transfers and reveal a completed item in Finder where that action is available. Check completion before opening it. Safari settings include a download location, and a destination prompt may change an individual save.

If the browser list no longer shows the item, inspect the directory or search Finder by filename. Removing an entry from the downloads list does not necessarily delete the file. Conversely, an entry does not preserve a video that was moved or removed. Browser records and file storage are separate, so use the actual copy as the basis for playback checks.

Check Files on iPhone or iPad

Use Safari's download controls if you started a transfer, then inspect Files. The destination can be under iCloud Drive or on the device, depending on configuration. Search by name if you are unsure where it went. A completed video need not automatically appear in Photos.

If the video only opens in a player, use an appropriate save or share action where offered, then verify its result in Files. Do not infer permanent saving from successful tab playback. Available controls depend on response type and operating system version; there is no universal button label for every video. Retain the filename so that you can identify the resulting copy.

Verify offline availability and playback

Open the saved file through its file manager, check a nonzero size, and test more than the first frame. For iCloud storage, distinguish a listed cloud item from a copy available without a connection. Keep a local copy when offline use matters.

If a transfer stopped early, return to a fresh ready download rather than renaming a partial file. A completed video that fails to play may need a compatible player or another available format. For a security or organization restriction, investigate that message instead of removing safeguards. Record the destination and error before another attempt so that saving, cloud availability, and decoding are not mixed into one diagnosis.

Worked example

Illustrative case: a clip plays in Safari but is absent from Photos. Files contains its completed download in iCloud Drive. Saving succeeded; placing a compatible authorized copy in Photos is a separate action and does not require repeating the transfer.
