Video archive audits: sampling is not complete verification

A few successful playback samples do not verify every byte, frame or project dependency in an archive. Define the claim before choosing an audit: byte correspondence, complete decoding, practical viewing and editable-project recovery need different evidence. Document the tested scope instead of calling one thumbnail or opening scene a complete integrity check.

Choose the claim and its reference evidence

For an exact-copy check, compare the retained artifact with an identified trusted reference using the same checksum algorithm. A newly calculated digest without an earlier reference records current bytes but cannot establish that those bytes are the intended original. An archive manifest should connect file identity, version, algorithm and digest without exposing unnecessary private source details.

For practical playback, inspect duration, channels and intended content in a compatible receiver. For project recovery, restore the project with its actual dependencies. These checks complement a checksum rather than replace it. A byte-identical copy can faithfully preserve an already damaged source, and a playable movie can omit editable assets that the recipient still needs.

State the limits of sampling and decoding

Opening, middle and ending playback checks are useful fast samples. Record their timestamps and receiver, and avoid extending their result to unobserved regions. A defect between those intervals may remain undetected. A readable container header or extracted thumbnail is an even narrower observation than watching the selected passages with sound.

Where complete decoding is required, a suitable local command such as ffmpeg -v error -i source.mp4 -f null - can exercise the default selected media without saving a converted movie. Read its actual errors and selected streams. It does not automatically test every alternate stream, perceptual correctness, captions or source authenticity. Explicitly select additional required streams or use a tool appropriate to the audit scope.

Check audit outcomes and preserve a recovery path

Separate checksum results, decode observations, playback samples and project restore evidence in the record. If an error occurs, preserve the file and diagnostic context and compare with the trusted source or an independent backup. Do not overwrite the only source with an unverified repair just to make an audit command stop reporting failures.

For a large collection, a sampled review can prioritize further work, but it cannot certify unexamined items. Decide which material needs full checks according to its role and the available reference evidence. SocialVidDownloader does not certify archive authenticity or replace independent backups. Its completed download is an artifact to save and verify; a successful temporary delivery response is not proof of a durable, complete production archive.

Worked example

Example: an archive review opens three moments from each of ten movies but contains fifty movies in total. Report those ten files and intervals as sampled playback checks. A digest comparison or full decode performed later is a separate result; neither should be implied for the forty unexamined items.
