Aspect ratio versus resolution: prevent stretched video

Aspect ratio describes a picture's shape; resolution describes its stored pixel dimensions. A larger file can still be displayed with the wrong proportions. When people look stretched or a portrait clip appears cropped, compare the intended picture shape with the player's fit, fill and zoom behavior before downloading another quality.

Read width and height together

A 1920×1080 picture made of square pixels has a 16:9 shape. A 1080×1920 picture is 9:16. Both have the same number of pixels but different orientation and proportions. The short label 1080p does not tell you which way a portrait recording should be presented.

For ordinary square-pixel clips, divide width by height to compare shapes. Doubling both dimensions preserves the same ratio; increasing only one changes it. This is why a larger source option does not inherently solve a stretched face or an incorrectly filled player window.

There is an important legacy exception: some formats use non-square pixels and display-aspect metadata. If stored dimensions and the expected picture shape disagree, consult the separate pixel-aspect explanation rather than forcing every old recording to the ratio implied by width and height alone.

Distinguish fit, fill, crop and stretch

Fit presents the complete picture within a receiving rectangle and can leave unused space around it. Fill occupies the rectangle and may crop part of the source. Stretch changes proportions to match the rectangle, which can distort people, circles or text. These behaviors answer different layout goals.

A portrait clip on a landscape screen usually needs either empty side space or intentional cropping. There is no way to fill the entire landscape rectangle, retain every part of the portrait picture and preserve its proportions simultaneously. Choose which requirement matters for the use case rather than calling every visible border a download fault.

Black bars can also be encoded into the pictures themselves. In that case, changing a player's background or fit option will not remove them from the actual frame. Examine a recognizable shot and use a local frame inspection to distinguish picture content from space added by the viewer.

Check whether the problem follows the receiver

Open the same completed file in another maintained player and restore ordinary fit behavior where supported. Compare faces, a round object or a known straight-sided sign. If the same object has different proportions between applications, investigate display interpretation before changing the retained video.

If every receiver shows the same stretched picture, inspect the original source or ask the owner for a reference. An uploader may already have stretched or cropped a recording before publishing it. Downloading that encoded representation faithfully cannot reconstruct portions of the scene that were removed.

Check orientation separately. A sideways picture requires an orientation diagnosis, while a tall face inside an upright frame suggests a shape problem. Keeping those observations distinct avoids making a rotation correction that leaves the actual proportions wrong.

Prepare a deliberate derivative when a layout requires it

When a permitted project needs a different output shape, decide whether to add borders, crop or redesign the layout in an external editor. Keep a separate source copy. Preview captions, faces and important objects at the final receiving dimensions; a crop that looks harmless at one timestamp can remove crucial information later.

SocialVidDownloader does not provide a custom crop or aspect-ratio editor. Select a genuine source result and make layout changes outside the downloader when authorized. Do not present a cropped derivative as containing the full original picture, or a stretched export as newly recovered resolution.

Write down the intended frame shape with the derivative's purpose. This helps a recipient understand why an archive master and a social-layout edit differ. If the wrong shape came from metadata interpretation, confirm the intended geometry before exporting a permanent correction.

Worked example

Example: a complete 1080×1920 portrait interview is opened in a 16:9 presentation. Fit preserves the speaker and leaves side space. Fill crops the upper and lower picture, while stretch distorts the speaker. For a presentation that must show captions and the full person, use fit or a designed border layout rather than calling the portrait source defective.
