A downloaded video plays sideways in another app
If the same completed video is upright in one application and sideways in another, compare how those applications interpret orientation before rotating the file permanently. A movie can store orientation information separately from its encoded frame arrangement. Preserve the original and test a separate corrected copy only after you establish the intended view.

Identify orientation as a separate symptom
A sideways picture, a mirrored picture and a stretched picture require different explanations. Record which way the image is wrong and whether the problem affects the entire clip. A phone held vertically during recording does not, by itself, establish how an exported file stored or signaled that orientation.
Use readable text or a recognizable horizon to identify the intended view. Do not rotate a file based solely on its numerical width and height: those values can describe stored frames before display transformations. A portrait picture can be represented using a landscape-shaped encoded frame plus orientation metadata.
Keep a copy of the current filename and the player's behavior. This makes it possible to compare results after a change without losing the original evidence. If the source already contains individual sideways shots, a global orientation adjustment may fix one part while breaking the rest.
Check the unchanged file in two receivers
Open the exact same local file in another player rather than downloading a second version immediately. Compare the same timestamp. If the orientation differs, the receiving applications are presenting that file differently; that observation is more specific than a claim that the download reversed the camera.
A media inspector can expose stream and side-data information useful for examining orientation. FFprobe provides an inspection route, although the relevant fields depend on the format and how it represents display transformations. Save the report instead of deleting unfamiliar metadata to see what happens.
Check whether the first application has a manual rotation override left from an earlier viewing session. A viewer control may affect only presentation, while an export creates a new file. Read the application's documentation to understand which action you are taking and whether it changes the source.
Choose a viewing adjustment or an export intentionally
For viewing, an application that correctly honors the intended orientation may be enough. There is no need to create a new compressed copy solely because another viewer has limited handling. For delivery to a required receiver, a separate compatible export may be justified.
QuickTime Player documents rotating or flipping clips as an editing action. That supplies one external workflow for a permitted local movie on Mac; it does not imply that every codec opens there or that every export preserves all streams. Preview the result, save it separately and compare duration and audio as well as orientation.
When an editor transforms encoded pixels, check what happens to the orientation signaling in the resulting file. Rotating the pictures while retaining an additional rotation instruction can cause a double transformation in a receiver. The goal is a consistently upright derivative, not merely one preview that happens to look correct.
Verify the result before replacing any working copy
Test the new derivative in the receiver that originally showed the problem and at least one other relevant application. Watch the start, middle and end, checking text orientation, picture proportions and audio continuity. Confirm that the output did not crop captions or alter the intended portrait shape.
SocialVidDownloader does not expose an orientation editor. Its role here is to obtain the authorized source representation; external presentation or editing controls handle the orientation task. If the file is unsupported by your editor, select a genuine compatible source option when available rather than changing its extension and hoping it will import.
For an unresolved case, ask the owner for an intended-orientation reference or an appropriate export. Report the app versions, observed transformations and media metadata, leaving out account secrets and private paths. Do not overwrite the source on the strength of one receiver's interpretation.
Worked example
Example: a phone clip has landscape-shaped stored frames but appears as a portrait recording in its intended player. A second application ignores the orientation and shows it sideways. Keep the source. If a delivery copy is needed for the second application, export an upright derivative and test it in both applications to detect an accidental second rotation.
