Stored pixels, active picture and display transforms

Encoded width and height describe a stored grid, but the intended visible picture can also depend on padding, sample shape and presentation metadata. Inspect both the source and the receiving display before cropping or rotating. A display instruction is not proof that the underlying pixels have already been physically transformed.

Video Information

Compare the grid with what the viewer actually sees

Use a stream inspector to record width and height, then play representative scenes. Black margins, a padded canvas or an intended active region can occupy only part of that grid. A dimension label alone cannot tell you which border is unwanted or whether an edge contains meaningful information later in the movie.

A clean-aperture indication can describe a presentation region without deleting every stored sample outside it. Interpret that signaling in the context of the actual container and receiver. Do not blindly copy an apparent display crop into a destructive processing step when you have not reviewed the source’s complete visual area.

Identify metadata transformations before changing samples

Display metadata can influence orientation or the rendered view separately from encoded picture order. If a player honors a rotation or another supported transform, the source can look upright even though a raw-frame inspection uses different stored geometry. Other receiving applications may interpret those instructions differently.

Compare the same retained file in the intended receiver and an inspection workflow. Check sample aspect information as well as orientation. This site’s Video Information tool summarizes dimensions, but it is not a comprehensive aperture or display-matrix analyzer. Use detailed local inspection for a metadata-specific delivery problem.

Verify any deliberately transformed derivative

If the recipient requires physically cropped or transformed pictures, create a separate authorized derivative with a suitable editor or local media workflow. Keep the original and write down what changed. Make sure the output’s remaining display metadata does not instruct the receiver to transform the pictures a second time.

Inspect faces, circular objects, text and moving objects near the edges. Verify the saved file in the recipient’s actual environment, not just one pleasing preview. A conversion that silently loses margins or stretches the scene has changed visual evidence even if it produces a standard-looking resolution number.

Worked example

A movie has a padded frame and an orientation instruction that one player honors. A second application displays the stored view differently. The creator checks the file’s metadata and complete edges before making a transformed copy, then verifies that the new file is not rotated again by its receiver. The numerical grid alone did not resolve the presentation task.
